Buy it for your grandchildren!, 2010-07-25 A friend recommended this after reading it to her children, aged 11 & 10. So I bought it with a view to giving it to my 12 year old granddaughter, but thought I should read it myself first! I was captivated and only wished I'd been given a copy myself when I was her age. Beautifully, yet simply, told, it makes "sense" of the history of humankind in a way that leaves you breathless. It's so refreshing to read a work of history that, while acknowledging the influence of "great" political and military leaders, does not glory in their exploits and pays appropriate tribute to the development of ideas across the centuries. I'm sure my granddaughter will love it and will hopefully learn a great deal from it.

A fascinating examination of life in Georgian England, 2009-12-29 An Englishman's home, as the saying goes, may be his castle, but three hundred years ago it was becoming so much more. In the 18th century, the English home served as a place in which its inhabitants sought to define themselves through the use of décor. As more people socialized in their homes, their living spaces became venues in which their identity could be displayed for others to see for themselves. The emergence and development of this trend is the subject of Amanda Vickery's book, which analyzes the lives of the men and women of Georgian England by examining the homes in which they lived.
In studying Georgian homes, Vickery uses a number of different perspectives. Among her goals is the reintroduction of men into the picture, which she does most notably in her chapter on the homes of bachelors. Yet as she demonstrates, the furnishing and decoration of homes was predominantly a female concern, albeit one often handled in consultation with the men of the household. Such decisions were often mundane, and focused more on simple maintenance rather than grand refurbishment, but all of them reflected the interests of the participants and were shaped by the concept of "taste" that emerged during this period, which charted a path that increasing numbers were compelled to take.
Detailed, insightful, and well-written, Vickery's book offers a fascinating examination of life in Georgian England. Because of the limitations of her sources, it is by necessity an examination focused primarily on the upper classes, yet she succeeds in taking account books, ledgers, and other mundane sources to reconstruct their lives, showing the growing importance of home life and the weight contemporaries placed on defining their domestic environment. Her success in unearthing these details and bringing the Georgian world back to life makes this book a necessary read for anyone interested in 18th century England, one that will likely serve as an indispensable study of the subject for decades to come.

From west to east, 2010-06-08 Stephen King's book is a timely reminder as we emerge from the frying pan of global recession into long term fire of austerity, that it is no longer possible for countries to act from an economic point of view, unilaterally. His book provides an interesting overview of the history of capitalism and in particular how events in Eastern Europe in the late 80's and decisions made in China towards the end of the 70's, have impacted the global economy. Mr King uses plenty of straightforward analogies to explain core economic principles, and thus avoids a text tedious with economic theory and language. The book highlights the dilemmas that face not only Mr Obama's administration but those of the Cameron-Clegg government. But it is indeed the US, that could end up being the longer term loser. That being said, the book highlights the assured mutually destructive nature of the Chinese-US economic union...they both need each other. A great read and for someone who missed out on Economics in school, a useful introduction to the subject.

A constant help., 2010-01-17 I started my Art History and Theory degree over three years ago and have now graduated with a 1st. And I can say that this text was consistently helpful throughout my studdies. There is always something to look back over whether it be a specific chapter or just a few pages. But an essential and easy to read book for any art history/theory or visual culture undergrads.

This is a great book ..., 2010-07-14 I had the pleasure of seeing Iain speak about it too. It is so refreshing to see a scientific book which doesn't shy away from philosophy. In fact, Iain integrates it and expounds upon it.
This is a book for anyone who has ever been curious about what the so-called missing 99% of our brain is for and how we can start to engage with it. The historical context tells the story - it's not so much missing but dormant and ignored.
I have one small observation (as opposed to criticism). The academic language obfuscates [pun intended] much of the brilliance of the book and I suspect will make it inaccessible to many who could well benefit from it.
I would stick my hand up to help with a layman's version - à la Stephen Hawkings - "The Master and His Emissary in a Nutshell" perhaps
