Average rating of 5/5 Teach Yourself Swedish, 2010-06-04
I am only part way into this course, but that's not surprising since learning a new language isn't easy. The book consists of eighteen units each of which majors on a specific area - for example, eating out - but also covers specific aspects of vocabulary, usage and grammar.

The units are quite densely packed so it isn't a good idea, for me at least, to attempt to move through this course rapidly. While working on unit 3 you may find that you have already forgotten something you thought you had learned in unit 1. This is not the fault of the book. It is easy to understand something then forget what you have understood. Learning involves not only assimilation but also retention and recall. You have to work at it.

The book comes with two audio CDs which are both excellent and essential. It is stated early on in the book that Swedish is relatively easy since it sounds as it is written once you know some basic rules. While this seems to be true, internalising the basic rules isn't so easy. I find German and Spanish very much easier to 'hear' than Swedish. Without the accompanying CDs this book wouldn't work, and even with them you may have to listen to a sentence or a phrase several times when the speaker runs several words together. (I recorded the dialogues into Pro Tools and selected extracts which were defying my ear, but this isn't an option open to all). The speakers seem excellent to me, though I am not well qualified to judge.

Before buying this book I checked out the alternatives. The main one was Rosetta Stone, which may be very good. But if you are facing this decision there are three points to bear in mind.
1) Rosetta Stone is based on the premise that we should learn a new language by the same process of natural assimilation by which, as a child, we learned our first language. Learning a new language should be a natural process, not a protracted act of drudgery. Attractive as this sounds, I think the premise is false. It is known that at a certain age the mind of a child is receptive to language. But it is also known that as the child grows up this facility is lost.
So if you are an adult you can forget it. There is no avoiding work.
2) This system also aids pronunciation. You speak a word into your mic and the software will hear it and tell you whether or not you have pronounced it correctly. But this is one of the hardest tasks you could expect of computer software and I would not trust it to do this well.
3) It costs a great deal more that Teach Yourself Swedish.

A lot of thought has gone into Teach Yourself Swedish and it can safely be recommended to anyone who is prepared to make active use of it.

Average rating of 4/5 Get your accounts in order!, 2008-04-21
After starting my own small business I realised I knew nothing about keeping accounts so I bought this book from Amazon. I have been using the recommended system for the last tax year and now that I am about to complete my second self-assessment tax return I am impressed at how simple it is to work out my income and also to calculate how much I have spent in the various tax-deductible categories.

I have taken off one star because in some places I thought things were not quite as clear as they could have been - nevertheless this is an extremely useful guide. I noticed that Amazon are promoting this book along with `Understanding tax for small businesses' - I have them both, and together they make it much easier for a novice like me to keep good accounts and fill in a tax return.

Average rating of 5/5 Does exactly what it says on the jacket, 2010-06-21
I enjoy doing jigsaws. Sometimes you spot an interesting piece, then find a couple of adjoining pieces thus ending up with a little island of meshed pieces that remain unconnected to the wider picture. This is an analogy for my knowledge of geology prior to reading the book here reveiwed. It consisted of a lot of interesting islands of knowledge which were isolated from each other with no continuous thread connecting them. This book, however, filled in the gaps and unified the picture such that I can now say I have a solid grasp of most, if not all, of the fundamental areas of geology. This, of course is an implied claim of the series title. I estimate my knowledge is now around UK A-level Geology standard. With a little more work I could achieve a high grade pass at A level.
I found each topic to be presented in a lucid and interesting way. The use of english was particularly good with a little warm humour appearing from time to time.
One thing that the book really established in my mind was the inherent instablity of geological systems, albeit when viewed on a geolical timescale. We see a mountain chain etc. and know that it has existed for our lifetime, for the lifetime of our father and grandfather, and for the lifetimes of our great-great-great-etc.-grandfathers. It will exist also for a similar timespan into the future with little relative change caused by erosion or earthquakes or volcanism. This is all viewed on our human timescale - a timescale incomparabley short compared with the immensely long swings of the geologic pendulum. Rocks, cooked deep in the earth's mantle at huge temperatures and pressures, emerge at the surface finding themselves in a pressure-temperature regime far removed from that at which they were created. No wonder they are unstable, just waiting to morph into some other rock-form.
For anyone like me who has a little background and would like to further it, this book is a must. Persons starting from scratch would also gain a great deal from a reading. Having finished the book I straightaway re-read it. Being interesting, lucidly presented and enjoyable to read this was no chore and greatly increased the information gained. I don't think I have learned as much from any science topic book as this one. I cannot recommend it enough.

Average rating of 5/5 Mr L, 2010-05-10
I quite like the practical style of Teach Yourself books and this book is no exception. As a practitioner, I found that the book offered a concise and sound theoretical introduction to CBT. I also found the diagrams and the step, by step approach very palatable. That being so, it's fairly achievable to do what it says on the cover.

i've always wanted to learn turkish to help me when i go abroad and to speak with friends of mine whom are turkish. But with soo many books and cd's on the market, it was difficult making a decison on which book to choose. Average rating of 5/5 Excellent independent tool for learning German, 2010-05-14
This is an excellent tool for those who want to learn German independently. There are a lot of similar books on the market but this has the advantage of taking you past the basic stages of language learning (to B2) without the learner having to resort to expensive language schools! The explanations are clear and the material straightforward to use. What is particularly useful is the content is directed towards those who want to use German in practical situations. I would wholeheartedly recommend it! I am also looking forward to trying out Perfect Your German.
