Intelligent, erudite, very well written, very well explained!, 2010-06-06 I bought this book as a gift for a cousin who likes me, loves mathematics. I thought I'd cheekily be able to read it beforehand, and boy, does it delight! It certainly gripped me: the puzzles are absorbing and presented in such an approachable manner. It even got me, formally trained in the subject, interested in looking up those other areas I've not looked at in years. And the recipient of the gift felt likewise too.
This is certainly popular science writing at its finest, a joy for the reader, and an inspiration for us all scientists/mathematicians/engineers who sometimes work with the public.

top stuff, 2010-05-21 This book looks pretty heavy..but as they say 'never judge a book by its cover'.
It is an absolute delight to read and despite the myriad of names,is very easy to get into.
Did you now Cyclops was Poseidons son?I didnt.
Anyhoo, the only down side for me is the occasional lapse into 'modern' talk..
Oddysseus 'took a powder' etc. which becomes a little more prevailant towards the end of the book, but that may be due in part to the fact that the book was translated from French.
Who knows?Who cares?
I won't,however, look at 'Jason and the Argonauts' (one of my favourite films as a child)in quite the same way ever again.
It is a loose telling of Oddyseus' travels following the sacking of Troy..and frankly the film could have been (still could be) a trilogy that would kick Peter Jacksons LOTR into touch.
But I digress.
This is a fantastic book and well worth reading and then going back to read again.

A magical mathematical cabinet, 2009-12-09 This book is a worthy successor to Professor Stewart's previous best seller. Full of entertainments for anybody with a fascination for mathematics, that under appreciated foundation to our science and technology, and for some of us one of the deepest of interests and a continuing delight.
The book is stimulating, entertaining, amusing and informative. If you have the slightest interest, buy it and read it.

A great read...and so many of the laws are true!!, 2010-07-12 I was sceptical of this book but had to buy it as I heard it was a really interesting read! That it was. Morales aside this book can help ensure you get the most out of life. I would not suggest living by all 48 of these laws or else it could backfire and you would end up very lonely but its worth reading to understand how others also may be playing you!

Very good read., 2010-07-22 A very interesting read with some quite startling theories. I especially like the one that debunks Dark Matter. As a physicist I have always had trouble with the idea of something that we cannot detect yet it makes up the vast majority of The Universe.

Time for a change, 2009-12-21 I was not looking for a book on this topic. I had in mind more of a "What Colour is your Parachute?" kind of book to help me discover a new career path, because I was fed up with stagnation. But, when I read this book it opened my eyes to a lot of issues.
I would compare it a little to the idea behind the movie "Groundhog Day", where the guy who thinks he is God's gift to everyone discovers that in fact he's a jerk and then spends time a) getting feedback b) learning and c) changing. This book covers similar topics using the management guru style rather than the romantic comedy in an attempt to target the senior executive.
Some of it is a little too "American" for me. I do like Americans, but they can be a little "American" (credit:Eddie Izzard). Lots of CEOs and COOs and golfy, basebally analogies.
If you're a thirty-something who thinks you're the bees-knees and you want to figure out why your boss hasn't promoted you yet (and what to do about it), this is excellent.
If you receive this book as a gift, take it as some valuable feedback that you need to change!

absorbing glimpse of a writer's bookshelves!, 2010-07-21 I loved this book and read it in one day. It allows you to browse, chapter by chapter, along Susan Hill's bookshelves as she tells you the writers and the books she has admired and collected through her long life as an avid reader. The chapters are arranged thematically so you can dip in and out. The basic idea behind the book is that she decided to read from her book shelves for one year and not to buy or borrow any books for that time. It's a great idea and one that I aspire to. I have a large pile of TBR (to be read) books too! The only problem with reading this great little book is that I have now spent an hour looking up Hill's final Top 40 books on Amazon. There are least a dozen books now added to my wish list!
Susan Hill also tells about her life in this book and I did not realise she had lived in Coventry for a time.
