another great story from Liane Moriarty, 2010-07-29 I read Liane Moriarty's book "The Last Anniversary" last year and was so captivated by it's storyline that I wanted to read anything else that she had written. "Three Wishes" proved to be just as good, if not better and "What Alice Forgot" is in the same league.
The writing is good, the characters are believable and the dialogue is just right. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and really looked forward to getting back to it when I was doing something else! For me, that's a sign a book is well worth reading!

Fascinating, 2010-07-01 This is a fascinating read. Although it is primarily American centric it is still a remarkable account of the events surrounding the failures driven by the "credit crunch".
It is fast paced and compelling. A brilliant insight into financial institutions & the tremendous egos that are often involved.

Intriguing and heavy reading, 2010-07-18 The Defence Of The Realm [The Realm referring to the UK]: The Authorized History Of MI5 is an interesting insight into the workings of one of Britains most secretive organisations The Security Service.
The first few chapters is about how the organisation was born out of an idea & necessity to safeguard the UK from within by one person; who with very little resources and people managed to effectively protect the UK from German Spies and other threats both in times of war and peace.
The book then focuses on era's including World War I & II, while also covering the workings of the Security Service during the Cold War and how the Security Service also handled the IRA. While the book focuses on specific events, Christopher Andrews also briefly covers how the Security Service had to change and evolve to keep up with modern times and even mentions when the Security Service first used UNIX; while also mentioning their advertising campaign during 2002 - 2003 which involved placing ads in newspapers like the Guardian while also using an recruitment agency (Barlet Scott Edgar Recruitment Solutions) to vet potential Intelligence Officers, Administrators etc.
The book ends with what the Security Service may face over the next one hundred years.

unforgettable, 2010-05-18 A Clockwork Orange set in a near-future dystopian society and it is narrated by Alex in 'nadsat', a slang used by the teens of the day. Nadsat incorporates elements of Russian and Cockney English. It provides a demanding read but makes the story so much more intense. It's disorientating at times, particularly when Alex is excited by something. This adds to the effect when reading the somewhat disturbing descriptions of the violent crimes the gang commit. I did find that once I'd gotten into the book, it was much easier to read and generally the slang terms could be worked out by the context. A few chapters in, I wasn't even really having to think about the previously unfamiliar words. Throughout the book I couldn't help relate Burgess' projected future (which I believe he had as the early 1970s) with current times. Although obviously not the same slang, it did remind me somewhat of listening to certain teens of today - being able to understand the general point but not necessarily the individual words
I actually listened to the audio of this book as well as reading the text version. This really helped with getting used to the language. The version I have is read by Phil Daniels who I felt was perfect for it in terms of voice and accent - factors I believe can make or break an audio book. The pace of the book was read at an immensely fast pace, as I'd expect a character such as Alex to speak if he were retelling the story aloud.
Alex's character was intriguing. We experience the story through Alex, his thoughts and feelings are all there on the page. While in no way a likeable character in terms of the acts he commits and his views on the world, Alex still draws in the reader. Throughout the book I couldn't help but hope that things would turn out right for him in the end, that he would turn things around.
A Clockwork Orange is an unforgetable.

Dick Francis, no one better., 2010-02-09 This book, Even Money, one of the best thillers Dick Francis has written, is just as good as ever, this time main theme, bookies.and very enlightening it was too, when I put my bets on for the Grand National I will be thinking of Mr.Francis. There has been a difference of late in the way the story is told, more up to date, technology etc; this is because Dick Francis now has the help from his son Felix where, until the last few thrillers he was assisted by his lovely wife. I have read, and still got, everyone of the brilliant books written by Dick Francis. This latest one is still as gripping as all the others and, if you like anything to do with horse racing his books are the ones to read, because although they all have a racing theme there is also another element to his books, which he effortlessly weaves into the story and as usual nothing gets done until I have "devoured" the story. I loved the Sid Halley reprise, a sort of bonus for all the devoted fans and I am a very devoted fan, not sure if I should mention this, but I would have loved to have had the nerve to ask our brilliant Queen if, after her mother had died, could I have the books that Dick Francis had sent to her as each book was finished, of course I didn't have the "nerve", (one of the titles).

Was Mr Rochester really such a hero?, 2010-03-03 I've recently reread Wide Sargasso Sea after many years. I think Jean Rhys is a wonderfull writer; first class imagination; evokes the landscape of the Windward Islands to such an extent you can feel it and smell it. Her sympathy clearly lies with the first Mrs Rochester who she portrays as a woman scorned and abused and ultimately turned to madness by the men who have surrounded her since she was a child.
If we are to accept Jean Rhys's imaginative portrayal of Rochester and Bertha then he had a long time to repent of his treatment of his first wife but presumably found redemption in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.
In my opinion Jean Rhys is one of the finist writers of the 20th Century and is much overlooked.
