Average rating of 5/5 3rd ed is excellent, 2009-06-06
Medical Biochemistry's general organisation is excellent. I like the full-colour illustrations and the clinical text boxes that keep me interested when I'm just about to nod off. The attempt to give an overview of the entire book on one page is brave and well worth a look.

Although the level of detail is extensive, it is well broken up by headings and this makes it ideal for PBL. Content is bang up-to-date and concise. After using the online resources of a few American textbooks, it's refreshing to see UK course relevant Multiple Choice Questions, Patient Orientated Problems and Short Answer Questions that Medical Biochemistry's online resources offer.

For a biochemistry book that provides maximum clinical relevance look no further. I would recommend that any library catering for Medical students stock many copies of this book.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent paediatric textbook for finals, 2009-12-10
This is the recommended text for paediatrics at Birmingham University Medical School, and for good reason. The text, whilst sometimes being lengthy, is well laid out, gives good explanations and goes into sufficient depth for final year undergraduate medicine and for junior doctors in this specialty. There are plenty of diagrams and break out boxes summarising key take home messages. Some reviewers don't like this book that much, but I would thoroughly recommend it.

Average rating of 5/5 Perfect Pathology book, 2010-07-17
Review from a Cambridge University medical student

This book is as if designed for the Stage 2: Clinical Pathology component. Gauging the number of books I see been carried about in exam term in the clinical school, about 40% of my year buy the book each time, with the number rising expoentially closer to the exams as people spread the word about the book.

Content: The level of detail is sufficient to get a distinction in pathology, if you learnt 80-90% of the total material. The content is that if you took Robbins: Basis of Pathology and made short notes from it, and added in all the useful diagrams/tables from Goljan's Review of Pathology. One of the main worries everyone has; is whether the detail is enough for the Cambridge syllabus, well it is and goes beyond it. It covers the histopath syllabus perfectly, and some of the haematology.

I have all sorts of path books; Robbins Basic Path, the larger Robbins Basis of Path, Goljan's Review of Path but I feel that this single book if learnt properly trumps them all for the Cambridge exams. No waffle, no superfulous detail. Just the right amount of detail for a distinction in the essay component, and if you memorized the boxes/tables; you will nail the TFMCQ, SBA, EMQ component. The book was also surprisingly useful to cover the practical path exam as well (ie details of the pathogenesis of disease)

My one regret? I wish I bought the book earlier before the Path exam and not the other books, and from talking to my friends; it seems that they have a similar feeling.

Average rating of 5/5 Perfect Depth for Dental Students, 2008-06-16
I used this book a lot for the first year of dental school, and I found that it goes into the right amount of depth needed for the histology part of the course. I tried Wheaters, and also the images are better than Stevens and Lowe, the content is somewhat sparing and if does not go into enough detail for a pbl based course.

Average rating of 5/5 Buy this book......take it from me!!, 2003-05-02
As a student studying under B.J.Moxham in Cardiff University you may think that I'm biased in my judgement but in all honesty this book will be extremely helpful in your first year. In addition to this it is one of very few books that will also get you through a huge porportion of your second year course as well!! It contains all the anatomy of the head and neck you will cover in your first year and then in your second year it will take you through your oral ecosystems course(development of teeth etc.). To sum it this book is good value for money and concise and I would definately suggest you buy this as very few books can be said to be useful in your first and second year!!

Average rating of 5/5 Fanatastic, 2010-02-25
After having a copy of another more popular clinical examination text out from the library on permenant loan since the start of my clinical years, I was pointed in the direction of Epstein's by a senior. Since then this has been one of the few textbooks that I have paid for, and I have not looked back. This is a great clinical examination textbook, integrating histories with examination and differentials. It does this in a slick and easy to read way with plenty of pictures and diagrams.

However there are plenty of other texts that do this. Where it succeeds over its competitors is in its comprehensiveness that will take you up to membership level. This really doesn't leave anything out whilst still remaining readable. As a result there is perhaps more information than you need for say 3rd year OSCEs - but this isn't for carrying around in your pocket and so is exactly what you want. Whilst Macleod's gives you little infoboxes for what to do in exam situations, Epstein's gives you infoboxes on acute medical problems that you might encounter on a MET/PAR call - far more useful. It just seems to be more clinically aware rather than exam focused and this is a nice change.

I cannot recommend enough that you at least take this 4th ed out from your library for a couple of weeks before going for the default medical student examination textbook, you might like it!

Average rating of 5/5 Good book, keep in your bag for reporting sessions., 2010-08-03
Fantastic book, comprehensive. The best radiological anatomy atlas out there. I can't see alot of difference between this and the previous edition though. This is pretty much the 'standard text' for the FRCR exam. Although the RCR like to put random stuff like sag. MRI of early pregnancy, just to mix things up. Really helps especially with cross sectional. Some of the images are a little blurred.
