Average rating of 5/5 No book apart from the Bible has made me feel so good!, 2010-03-28
I must admit, I thought this book would be deeply naff. However I bought it to cheer me up after being rejected by a girl I fancied at uni. I was devastated as we had been really good friends and I blamed myself. This book is a fantastic boost for confidence. Neil Strauss does not blame or criticise like many self-help books, but he engages you to change, day-by-day. I admit, some of the stuff did not work and I thought I was mad for trying things from a bloke who looks like a creepy misogynist on the cover with an endorsement from Russel Brand of all people!

However, it helped to turn my life around and helped me recognise my problems with confidence in life, not just with women. Neil Strauss writes like your best friend and he makes you feel good. No other book, apart from the Bible has made me feel that way.

Did I get laid? Well not as dramatically well as this book promised, but I felt more confident around females and I now have a girlfriend who I absolutely adore. She is really stunning to me and I think this book built my confidence to approach her initially. Thanks Neil!

Average rating of 5/5 The Raw & the Cooked, 2010-08-23
Bourdain is a great writer, his style is all his, blunt, honest & he takes no prisoners. If you're a fan of the kitchen underbelly, then you'll surely enjoy this new book from him.

Average rating of 1/5 Review of Predictable Irrational, 2009-09-10
I was very disappointed with the quality of this book. The pages are made of recycled paper, did not fit inside the cover very well and all the pages were a different size. The actually paper quality was like the paper you get in a scrap book. Do not buy this book if you are looking for quality as it has been made very cheaply. You would be better off with a digital version to download and then print off your self. The information itself is goog once you can separate the pages becuse they tend to stick together due to the porous and low grade quality of paper. Probably the worse book I have ever come across and is an embarrassment to have on my bookshelf.

Average rating of 5/5 Only Rock 'n' Roll, 2010-08-22
This is an absorbing memoir that you will find hard to put down, although due to the nature of it it does become a bit repetitive in places with all the sex. Roxana Shirazi gives us an account of growing up under the Shah's regime in Iran, and then after the revolution the religious regime that replaced it. Admittedly for most people it must have felt like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire; you get rid of one totalitarian government, only to have it replaced by another. She talks frankly about the child abuse that she received, and about the bullying and rascism she experienced when she first came to England with her gran. Gradually the whole family came to this country but it took time as they didn't want to arouse suspicion in their homeland.

Roxana talks openly also about her sexual encounters, and the fact that she was 24 before she lost her viginity. She likes sex but as she soon found out in all countires it is the same. If a man has a lot of partners he is considered to be a stud or a player, but if you are a woman then you are considered to be a slapper. Getting into the whole rock scene she talks about her life as a groupie, where she would hang around numerous bands to get her rocks off.

By the end of the book I really could feel for Roxana. You don't really seem to care about how many people she has slept with or what she has done, however you feel sorry for her going through an abortion, the fact that she can't seem to find love and that she seems to be one of nature's victims. An absorbing and interesting book, this gives you an idea of behind the scenes at rock concerts throughout the world.

Average rating of 5/5 Enjoyable read, 2010-08-20
Don't be put off by the thickness of the book, you find yourself reading large parts as you are unable to put the book down. A lovely, simple but tragic story. Even though I'm not an animal lover, I totally enjoyed reading this book. Oprah recommended it and I was not let down.

Average rating of 5/5 An American Journey in Politics, 2010-07-18
This seem more of a memoir than an autobiography but it gives us a quick introduction to Sarah Palins' life in Alaska growing up, how she met her husband. She seems to be very open about her family and friends. You can tell by the writing style that Mrs. Palin wrote the book herself as the structure is in her conversational tone and not that of a professional biographer that many use and claim as their own writing. I found this rather refreshing. She shared with us those who had influenced her and assisted her in personal and political life. An interesting story of an American that saw a job that needed to be done and accepted the challenge.

Sarah Palin shares her drive to help her community that first got her into local politics that would eventually take her into the Governor's mansion of Alaska and then the campaign trail as candidate for the Vice President of the United States on the McCain/Palin ticket. Her competitive no non-sense spirit and practical view of life is one many Americans can relate too. Her record as Mayor and Governor speak for themselves and she does write about how she was able to move through some of her policies for the benefit of the people she governed. But for a quick synopsis of her accomplishments as Governor she allows a rather forthright letter written by an Alaskan Citizen to itemize her gubernatorial accomplishments.

Besides the focus on her family and her ethics what I found very interesting about this book was the behind the scenes look at the national political scene and what transpires to those even when they think they are out of the lime light. The affects on Palins' political and family life that a national election can elicit were amazing. It is not that the reader is not already aware of how the media and certain individuals are not ethical and only know how to destroy persons instead of debate policy; but we see all the affects on a person who is doing all she can to help.

The false allegations that were used to attack her on the campaign trial and when it was over and she tried to return to governing the state. The unethical attacks on her in an ever mounting filing of ethic violations that would cost her more in legal fees than she had ever earned in public office to defend. And to me what makes it worse is that not one filing was a valid complaint, she was found to be free of all wrongdoing and it was she that promoted the ethics procedures. Which as we read apply in Alaska only to the executive branch with no punishment for those who file false claims.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and found that she was just another hard working faith-filled American. But the greater truth of the book in my opinion is it shows why good people will not run for political office. It is amazing that people like Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana, are willing to go through all these unjust attacks and false allegations for the good of their constituents. It is a tribute to their strength and sense of duty.
