Average rating of 5/5 really sound work, this is..., 2009-07-29
If you have any of the range of obsessive disorders (ie suffer from them) or if you live with or are a friend of someone who does, then I do recommend this book to you. You may find that reading this book is more use than, say, going to your GP (doctor) about how to deal with these issues. Therapies abound in today's world and there may still be a number of psychoanalysts who might mistakenly feel they can effectively address these issues. Whereas a CBT approach such as this (cognitive behaviour therapy) is far better attuned to dealing with the problems. This is a practical book written for the lay reader, though I'm sure it would be more than instructive to a professional addressing these issues for the first time, too. It's a workbook in format for much of the time, but it also takes on discussing the nature and origins of obsessional phenomena or obsessive traits. It has a wonderfully down to earth and common sense tone that reassures the reader. Any sufferer is likely to be relieved to discover that their apparently "bizarre" behaviours are in fact very common, very "normal" and can be alleviated by the techniques laid out in this book. This book will be a godsend to some, I assure.

Average rating of 5/5 Published in 1979 and still the Standard Text in the field., 2002-04-18
As a training clinician I have read many other excellent texts on CT/CBT, however Beck et al's seminal work is simply priceless. Erudite, concise, occasionally witty and always humane, this book speaks to neophytes and seasoned professionals alike. Theory is presented with parsimony and seamlessly integrated with practice. The evidence base of the text is sound and one always feels that this text is not merely reactionary to psychoanalytic concepts. but a sincere development and deepening of our understanding of depressogenic architecture and its treatment. Read in conjunction with Beck's Cognitive Therapy and the Emotional Disorders, the beginner has a rock solid foundation on which to build, while established clinicians can always 'dip in' for a refresher.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent, 2010-02-17
I found this book to be excellent - covering case conceptualisation from novice to advanced level. It is easy to use on a daily basis and the diagrams and case studies makes an often complex presentation easier to understand. Discussing incorporating strenghts and applying it to a model is extremely valuable to me.

Average rating of 5/5 Taking charge of Anger, 2006-03-25
This is a great, great book. A real eye opener. I'm glad that I got my hand on this book in time (before I ruined my marriage). Actually this book doesn't accuse you of being "bad" person but quiet opposite, it teaches you understand your anger, where its coming from example my childhood experiences (trust me I was shocked), how to express yourself and finally brings lasting change in your life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live their life as a calmer and less confrontational person. MY BIBLE (amen). And to you who find the courage like me, THIS BOOK WILL HELPS you on your way. It definitely helped me.

Average rating of 5/5 CBT for Eating Disorders, 2009-09-30
Fairburn makes this therapy model more accessible to clinicians who might need some outside input to this growing problem. It is very well written and provides practical tools for clinicians to utilise with their clients.

As always,Fairburn produces brilliant, practical work.

Average rating of 5/5 excellent !!!, 2010-06-06
my wife has had bipolar since her teens, but it was only just diagnosed in the last 2 years, she is adamant about leaving the family and trying to beat this on her own, this book goes through all the problems that partners go through, a lot of it was so true to life it was like it was written for us, my wife refuses to read the book as it identifies her illnes, she cant accept what she has, this book is like a lifeline to carers and partners alike, i would recommend it to anyone who has to live with the illness.

Average rating of 5/5 Clear, understandable and user friendly, 2008-12-29
The book is easy to follow, flows easily from chapter to chapter and provides sound rationales for utilising a cognitive behavioural approach with clients. It identifies both nomothetic and idiographic formulations and again identifies clear rationales for using both approaches. This is extremely useful when clients present with multiple diagnostic issues or there is a query in respect of primary diagnoses.

Zayfert and Becker begin the journey by identifying the evidence base supporting CT for PTSD, the use of rationales to guide treatment in terms of 'conceptualisation' and then identify the specific therapeutic processes and therapist factors that are needed to achieve a positive therapeutic alliance.

The text goes on to outline the role of collaberation in achieving a true and accurate formulation of problem areas and strengths and uses clear case examples to guide the reader through the processes involved.

As for the treatment paradigm, both authors provide easy to follow sections for treatment planning, psychoeducation, exposure and cognitive restructuring work. The focus of each session is broken down into easy to follow strategies and is particularly useful in identifying potential "road blocks" to therapeutic progress.

The book has easy to follow handouts for the use of therapist and patient alike with a particular emphasis on normalising peoples responses to fear inducing situations which it does admirably with the use of 'third person' statements and metaphor.

Conceptually, the text builds on the work of Foa and Ehlers and Clarkes models. It provides concise treatment strategies for exposure, psychoeducation and restructuring, and provides worksheets that give direction for the reader in addressing the ever so common issues that result from the trauma sequlae and the meaning given to the same by people.

As a UK and Australian registered Psychologist and British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies accredited Cognitive Therapist, I have no hesitation in recommending this text to colleagues. The text is comprehensive and understandable and will provide the reader with a fuller understanding of how to work with trauma and its human consequences.
