Covers everything i needed to know, 2006-11-05 Another great Dr Hessayon book
I'm not a rose person myself but I bought this book as my wife likes roses and we had a very sad looking rose in the back garden. I was going to dig it up and compost it, glad I didn't as it just didn't like the soil it was in.
I came across the book in a charity shop [...], turned out to be a bargain really.
The book covers all kinds of varieties of roses from Hybrid tea to patio and ground covering roses, even covers climbing and ramblers.
Fantastic photo evidence which helps to identify your roses, and a general description about it.
Covers what kind of rose will grow better and where is the best place to plant it.
I also found the section on how to identify diseases very helpful, it has great photos of the diseases that can affect your roses and it gives great information about how to treat it, it also covered the problem I was having with my rose.
Maintenance is covered in the book, this covered pruning and spraying.
Great references, which covers all the information you will probably ever need about roses.

The Flower Expert, 2008-08-28 A great book to have with you in the garden if unsure of any plants,
Contains all the information on garden flowers/ soils and pests and there prefered growing enviroment.
What I have found is that many glossy papers advertise flowers and they look great but after a quick read through of this book it becomes clear that they wouldnt be ideal for my garden or that they need a lot of TLC.
A lot of information in a very clear format.

From almost medieval times the lawn has been an integral part of the well-planned garden. Only the soul-less would deny the pleasure of walking barefoot on a cool green sward on a warm summer day. The lawn is more than a functional space--it is commonly part of the fantasy garden that we at least daydream about if not achieve. Whatever your hopes and expectations The New Lawn Expert can provide you with a good head start as Dr Hessayon offers his trademark clear explanations and easy-to-follow guidance. If you are starting from scratch then here we have everything from preparing the ground to the care of the established lawn. If you have an area of grass that fails to measure up to the title "lawn", then help is at hand as troubles are identified and remedies provided. The book has excellent step-by-step diagrams providing information and more importantly solutions to every conceivable problem during every month of the year. You might well be a devoted lawn manager with an enviable green sward but still you may have problems--lawns are like that--which is almost part of the obsession. This book then should provide a pleasurable and potentially restorative read. --T...

Even for someone who is rather proud of their arrangement of hanging baskets and tubs, this book is a great read. As with all Dr Hessayon's books the illustrations and clear instructions are what first appeal, but in this case the real bonus is the enormous fund of ideas it offers, all in coloured photographs. From car tyres to wooden troughs--if you can grow a plant in it, it's in here! A huge variety of containers are suggested for all kinds of situations, from a flat with no garden to a mansion with terraces. Full information for planting is given for flowering bulbs, annuals, perennials and trees, shrubs and bonsai, photographed in an ambitious variety of containers and locations. In addition to the ornamental garden there is a great section of container-grown fruit, vegetables and herbs--particularly valuable for the gardener cook with a limited space. All in all this is a delightful and handy book which really inspires you to make container growing a feature of every garden and available space, 12 months of the year. An excellent quick reference title for your bookshelf and one appropriate and appealing to gardeners of all standards. --T W Falinska
Practical information in a glance, 2001-04-10 For anyone starting out in gardening, I would recommend this book for its practical info and coverage of all aspects regarding containers. From beginning to end, from utensils to choosing plants to types of soil to the containers themselves, the user-friendly text provides answers to all the questions and difficulties encountered.

Proper User Guide for a Veg Plot, 2008-05-31 Too many gardening authors take time out to wax lyrical about seasons and the joys of blackbirds and dew on your runner canes. Their books end up as a decent afternoon's read, but difficult to use when you're trying to work out what's going wrong with your kohlrabi.
This book is different. Veg are listed alphabetically with clear sections on selecting varieties, planting, looking after, harvesting and cooking, with a troubleshooting guide covering disease, pests, storage and the like.
No nonsense, everything you need and easy to find.

A great book for any fruit growers., 2007-08-11 I have owned this book for several years. I have found it to be invaluable in the choosing and growing of many different fruits. It has extensive sections and reviews with colour pictures on choosing different varieties of apples pears, peaches etc. This includes some more unusual varieties as well as those more commonly available. The reviews are as useful in telling you what not to plant as what to plant. There are reasonable sections on pruning (but I think this is better done by the RHS Growing Fruit book.) The section on diseases and pests is also very good with clear illustrations for correct identification of problems.
In summary an excellent book particularly to help with choosing which varieties to plant, although the prunning sections are a little breif.
