Average rating of 5/5 Great ideas and lovely recipes, 2010-02-15
I bought this book last week and really love it. So many different chefs and such a great choice of recipes - it's like having bought 30 books by different chefs. So far I've cooked three things - Matt Tebbutt's perfect roast beef, Tristan Welch's spiced pears with chocolate mousse and Jill Dupleix's glass noodles with salmon mint and lime - and I'm really looking forward to trying more of the recipes. Definitely recommended. I'm going to buy a copy for my mum too - she'll love it.

I own these CDs along with the Smart Spanish series, and Practice Makes Perfect, and I found that the combination was a good one: Easy Learning Spanish (Collins Easy Learning Audio Course) makes you master useful basic sentences, while Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar (Practice Makes Perfect Series) teaches you by writing and SmartSpanish - Introduction to Spanish, Vol.1 adds great tips on pronunciation to their efficient explanations of the structure of the language. All three are awesome together.

Average rating of 5/5 Brief review, 2010-01-23
You may want to recheck the dimensions because it is pocket sized.

A very good gatherers book, which shows british plants that are found all year round with ideas of how to cook or eat them. The species are well discribed and illustrated with drawn pictures or photographs, often both making the plants easily identifiable.

The book often adds a few tips "cook for 2 minutes but no longer, otherwise the taste and texture will go and it'll go stringy"

The book has a calender at the front which has plants that grow in each month of the year so you can always be looking for some plant.

Example of the discription-
"Goosegrass
Widespread and abundant in hedges, woods and cultivated ground. A straggling, bristly annual 50-180cm (20-70 in) high with square stems. Leaves: narrow, pointed, in whorls of 6-8, covered with tiny turned-down prickles. Flowers: inconspicuous white, greenish-white, May-June."
continues with what it is widely known for, when to harvest and pick it and it's uses. It's all very brief and to the point.

Back of book discription-
"Richard Mabey's masterpiece in a backpack size
A guide to over 100 edible plants, berries, mushrooms, seaweed and shellfish- all beautifully illustrated
Advice on when to gather, what to pick and how to cook"

On the same day as I received this book(in the middle of january) I was able to successfully identify and eat two items that I found from this book. The fungi velvet shank and the plant chickweed. I would be lying to say that they were delicious but they weren't bad and the fun is in finding and eating your own food.

Tremendous; so much information that'll make it good for dipping into over a lifespan of years. Hardback possibly a bit heavy for use in the field, but the clarity of descriptions and drawings make that pale into insignificance. Buy it!

Average rating of 5/5 Cool, and useful too., 2010-03-09
This book is almost certainly unique. The objective seems to be to present information in as many different visual methods as possible.
It's great in two ways. First, as a book to dip in to and gain new insights and perspectives on different issues. And there are many different topics covered here - to pick a few at random - "Which Fish are Okay to Eat", Dance and Rock Genres, Blocked websites in China and Most profitable movies.
It's second use is for communicators - anyone who needs to get information across effectively whether as a student or a professional. There are so many different ways of presenting information here, you're certain to find something effective for your situation.
As noted by other reviewers, the current edition does seem to have one or two printing omissions, but they don't really affect the effectiveness of the book as a whole.

Average rating of 5/5 Best cookbook ever, 2010-03-05
I needed a cookbook suitable for a low fat diet. This is fits the bill perfectly, a good variety of dishes suitable for all occasions. Easy to follow, uses everyday ingredients, short preparation time. Some dishes benefit from a little extra spicing. Has changed my eating habits. The resulting weight loss is an unexpected bonus.
