Average rating of 5/5 wonderful...make the lot, 2010-07-25
There are lots of reviews for this book but I just wanted to let you know that I've had this book for a year now and I've been able to use most of the recipes, everything being seasonal, and it's the most brilliant set of recipes and advice notes that I've ever come across. I didn't have any even slight mishaps or disappointments and the recipes themselves are outstanding. I've boiled, bottled and tasted, there's a magical kind of alchemy in making good preserves and everything's been wonderful. In the past I've used different jam-pickles-preserves books and sometimes you just end up thinking you can buy better in farmers markets so why bother, they're either beautiful photos with average recipes or plain dull ideas. I love the River Cottage Bread Book too but this one is really special.

Average rating of 5/5 great catch, 2010-07-12
An absolutely wonderful book at a bargain price. Beautifully proportioned, this book is an aesthetic delight. The content is good too. I bought this book not long after my first beach rod and it has been really useful. The 'introductory' book to sea angling i picked up from the local library first assumed a certain degree of knowledge that i simply didn't have. This deals with all the essentials of catching fish from baits and species to where and when to go and how to fillet, gut or otherwise prepare them for my belly. It's also well written.

Average rating of 5/5 Thank You Steven Fry, 2010-07-25
I have just listened to all 7 Harry Potter books from beginning to end. What a joy as I pottered (no pun intended) in my garden. I had started reading the books with my son and when he progressed to reading them on his own I didn't bother with the last 3 and saw the films instead. However, my son downloaded all 7 books as a birthday present and I decided to re-aquaint myself with the earlier books finishing with the last one which was all new. How wonderful to listen to Steven Fry, what a fantastic storyteller - which came first his voices for the characters which were then matched in the films or the other way round? Either way, I enjoyed picturing the actors who played the characters brought to life by Steven's voice. The last chapter in the Deathly Hallows (Nineteen Years Later) was too short for me; I wanted to know more about Hogwarts - who was headmaster/mistress, what happened to Luna, the rest of the Weasleys, etc., etc. Maybe JK has another book up her sleeve? I'm looking forward to the last of the films next year. What to listen to next? I fancy the Twilight series (loved the films)but feedback on the reader of the book has not been good - could Stephen Fry not do this one too?

Average rating of 5/5 Absolutely first class cook book for family & friends, 2010-07-20
I actually saw an couple of the recipes from Sarah Raven's new book Food for Friends and Family in a magazine and I was so impressed with it. So impressed that my husband immediately cooked the Chicken Stuffed with Garden Herbs the very next night and it was absolutely delicious. Fuelled by a love of good food, I then purchased the book and am in love with it. Even more lovely recipes to try. Ideal for entertaining friends and family.

Average rating of 5/5 informative and instructive, 2010-07-05
What a superb book.

I bought this book two years ago with the vague idea that I would bake some bread. What an epiphany. I have not been disappointed with my results and have managed to make mostly every recipe in the book.

I defy anyone not to improve their baking after reading this book.

The pizza recipe was a real eye-opener. I had dispaired at finding a replication for the beautiful dough bases I had experienced some 20 years ago in the South of France. These taste just like them and are reason alone for buying the book.

This book is responsible for changing a vague notion into a complete passion to the extent I cannot eat mass-produced bread, it simply does not satisfy in the same way.

Get this book and change your life!

Average rating of 5/5 Harry Potter the Series is a great read!, 2010-06-14
I am an adult but I gave the Harry Potter Series a go after a friend recommended it to me. And I am very glad that I did; as I laughed, cried and sped through the pages of all 7 books as I am sure children did!
My first tears of the series where shed in this book and continued in parts throughout the rest of the series.

I feel it only fair to take all 7 books and consider them as a whole, rather than on an individual book basis.
The 1st book starts with Harry as an 11 year old each book represents a year, starting off in the summer holidays and finishing at the end of term, with Harry being dropped back off at Kings Cross Station.

I found that as the series progressed, the content of the books became more mature. Almost as if the author was intending the readers to grow up along side Harry. In fact, I would go as far to say that the final book in the series is too dark for an 11 year old to understand completely.

Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban is brilliant, my favourite Harry Potter book.

This book shows Harry deal with very difficult adult emotions that no child should have to go through, but he does so with dignity and without seeming 'old' before his time.

Not only has he had to deal with being treated like a pariah by the Dursleys his whole life, but at the opening of this book he is berated and insulted by his Uncles sister. She insults his dead mother & father, and after he gets no support(unsurprisingly)from the Dursleys he loses his temper & accidently performs magic in front of muggles (non-magic people,) which is punishable by expulsion. Harry is now in despair, he thinks he is going to be expelled from the only place he has felt happy and runs away from the house (where he is now less welcome than he ever was after causing Aunt Marge to resemble a helium balloon.)
The emotional rollercoaster continues throughout the book; the worst kind of betrayal, the euphoria of success on the quidditch pitch, the events leading to his parents murder, learning from professor Lupin...

In this book there is no race against time to save the school from Voldemort, but strangely it is actually more exciting.
