Historic pantomime, 2010-01-19 Nichols has created a play that presents a rather nasty part of British history in the form of a pantomime. The Opium War in the early years of Victoria's reign, which led to crippling economic misery for Imperial China, and a great deal of shady profit for the British Empire, seems to be an odd tale for a panto, but Nichols delivers with acerbic gusto - sex, drugs, oppression, corruption, and war. Not much fun for kiddies, and many adults may feel a little queasy too, but it is a startlingly powerful piece of entertainment and instruction.

Is everything you know wrong...?, 1998-06-11 One gets breathless reading, for what could well be, a well-written science fiction story: an episode of THE OUTER LIMITS; One then wonders-chicken or egg? Did these events inspire fiction as they leaked out, or did the TV show inspire the author. Written in such a matter-of-fact style, that one is easily sucked into the proceedings... Totally fraudulant fiction, or secret research on the edge of forever...? Next to the PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT, the MONTAUK PROJECT is fast becoming as well known, and even if partly true, is bone chilling;

Great mix of emotions - honest and informative, 2003-05-28 Peter Nichols is a superb writer. The first emotion I experienced when reading this book was 'I'm going to enjoy this'. His prose is so crisp and flowing that you're just carried along with the story like a piece of flotsam on the ocean.And what a story. At times heartrendingly open and honest about the break-up of his relationship, he mixes this seamlessly with his feelings about sailing and his trusty boat, Toad. He's sailing her to America to sell her, as the boat is the only thing of value that he and his ex-wife owned together. The best recommendation I can give about this book is that I was reading it at the airport before a particularly nerve-wracking trip, and it inspired me enough to forget my worries and get on with the trip! It's the kind of book that you buy just because. Just because it LOOKS interesting, even though you haven't read the blurb. The difference with this one is that it stays with you long after you finish it. I loved it.

I agree with aimeemoss..., 2003-10-29 With this play, Nichols has managed to walk the tight rope between black humour and heartbreak. He has taken the taboo subject of children with a disability and thrown it at the audience like ripped shreads of paper so that they all have a piece of the subject to confront in a non-pc way. Every character has their own unique relationship with the audience, exposing more of society's truths on the subject. Nichols even enjoys adressing the issue of squeamishness which all of us have to admitt to feeling. His humour is sharp and witty and will have you crying, but, so will his heartbreaking honesty which does nothing to flatter people or make them feel better!

No nonsense insight of how it was, 2008-02-26 This book is a real insight into the RAF and the run up of the Golf War. Neither men portray themselves as `heroes' nor do they pretend to make up a story to give the impression they were some kind of James Bond.
They tell a terrifying story of being shot down and captured. Both explain their expectation of being killed and the joys of being released. Sorry to use to the pun, but this book is difficult to put down once started and I would recommend it to all. Trilling, terrifying and insightful, this book is one of the best I have read!
