this textbook is amazing, it has well written explanation of how to carry out a typical question, step by step, assuring knowledge in each one. This book was used as the main reference point for Maths A-Levels and is better than any other maths a levels books out there. i'm sure a beginner can pick up the mathematical concepts really well, by following the book!

Good but could be better, 2010-04-27
Pros - good examples, challenging questions, comes with the whole book on CD. The CD also contains questions and answers (not just the answers, shows you the full step by step instructions on how to get the answer).

Cons - some of the answers are wrong - doesn't help when you are trying to learn.

i haven't used the book as such...but my son says it is so easy to follow that he can teach himself the subject.... he also likes the fact that it is colourful and vibrant... had it been b/w he would have not have liked it as much i think....

I recently taught a week long revision course in mathematics and this was one of the resources I used. It covers the material very well and contains plenty of useful questions and review exercises. As a quick reference to all topics included in C3 it is invaluable.

Maths at its best, 2010-01-02
I am collecting the complete course for Pure Mathematics by Keith Pledger and have only the C4 edition to get. I haven't started the course yet, but having browsed through the 6 editions I have, I find everything clearly laid out with plenty of examples and exercises and you can't beat plenty of practice! The text is easy to follow and anyone with hopes of good grades at A/AS level will not be disappointed. But beware the Further Pure sections. These are not for the faint hearted, but again are clearly laid out but require a full understanding of the Core sections before attempting. Excellent.Can't wait to get started!

Mathematics S2, 2009-12-05
I am currently studying A-level at a college and after having used the old version of the S2 book (Same publisher) I will say that this is just as good as the old version. The good thing about these new books is that they come with a solution bank on a CD which is very helpful as it shows step-by-step guidance on how to solve each and every question (something that the old version did not have), and these methods are pretty much the same as my teacher's method of teaching (He never uses the CD). The objection however is that the book does not show as many difficult questions as the old version does (to show the true face of the S2 module) and slightly lacks the rawness. All that's really been done here is that there is more colour, a solution bank CD and each chapter from the old book has been divided into two chapters. Because it is difficult to get hold of the old version (since they don't make them anymore) I will recommend this book. As long as you do each and every question and finish the book once twice and a third time (without cheating by looking at the solution bank) you should get a good result.

Good book... many mistakes!, 2010-04-01
This is a really useful, informative book. However, I'm glad I'm using this under the supervision of a teacher, as there are many careless mistakes in it, especially the worked examples and some answers in the back of the book. The CD is probably the most useful part, as I can print questions off and not have to write them out again on paper, as many of my errors come from copying the questions down wrong.
Overall, a really useful book.. in fact all my AS levels are tought from the same series. I could never understand D1 until I bought it!
