I really enjoyed reading this book. It struck an excellent balance between scientific insight and salacious gossip. What a combination!

I was reading this in my hospital bed needing something demanding enough to save me from terminal boredom, but that I could pick up in short bursts. Just what the Doctor ordered.

Average rating of 5/5 An elementary purchase!, 2009-10-09
As a chemistry teacher, this book is quite simply excellent. Whatever element you need to know about, its here - and not just boring facts. Its written in a style that draws you in - and before you know it, you have looked up 3 or 4 more elements just out of interest. Well worth the money - a great book to dip in and out of.

Average rating of 5/5 Molecules at an Exhibition by John Emsley, 2005-05-27
In my opinion, John Emsley is a fantastic writer. I have thoroughly enjoyed this read.
Anyone with a general interest in chemistry or even just science would enjoy this book; it is full of interesting facts.
A vast knowledge of chemistry is not needed, I am merely an A-level chemist myself!!
Read it and I hope you love it half as much as I have.

Average rating of 5/5 Molecules of murder, 2009-07-21
Quite simply excellent. Written in the usual readable Emsley style, the book details a number of murder cases in which foul play of a chemical nature was involved.
Whilst the book focuses on the chemical agents which were used to commit the various murders, it remains accessible to the non-scientist reader.
All-in-all, a thoroughly good read.

Average rating of 5/5 Absolutely a delight!, 2005-08-19
Here you have most of all what has made phosphorous a part of our history. From the destoyed life of the match making girls, via the bombing of Hamburg and industrial accidents, to some of all the need we have for phosphorous...
Well, yes; It could to have been written more about phosphorous in semiconductors, perhaps about silicate-like aluminium-phosphorous catalysts and potential problems with phosphorous in aluminium metal or in alloys.. What I missed was a bit more of the appendixes: With a small advanced appendix for the chemists/physicists that explained the phosphorous light of phospourous with approriate quantum mechanics and diagrams; the structure of this rare Hittorf's phosphorous etc. But the most important thing isn't to get The Perfect Book. The important thing is just to get books that are so well written and well researched as this book - at all. - A perfect book as a gift for somebody with a little interest in chemistry or history, or a treat for oneself.
