Average rating of 5/5 Not chick lit, 2010-05-17
In my view the biggest error made by the publishers of this book was the cover. It leads one to believe it is a much lighter 'chick lit' type of read than it really is. For me, this nearly put me off buying it, and for others who have reviewed it who clearly wanted 'chick lit', it has left them disappointed.

I was not at all disappointed: this is a well-written, well researched and rounded book about marriage, its history, its cultural and emotional implications as well as its religious (and non-religious!) background. Elizabeth writes as a clearly mature, liberal individual and intersperses fact with her own take on the subject in a well-balanced way. I very much enjoyed it.

I am using this book in two ways, to help with my own writing but also and probably more related is the use of the exercises in an Inspired Creative Writing Group I facilitate.

Has helped me to generate and create new ideas.

Average rating of 5/5 A delightful first novel about love, life, and... lobster fishing!, 2009-03-24
Don't be put off by the fact that this book is about lobster fishing. No, seriously, don't! This is a wonderful novel about love, work and growing up.

Yes, I did learn more about lobsters than I could ever have imagined - but as part of the most delightful romp of a plot. It's an unusual but very readable story about feuding Maine islanders, focusing on the story of a very engaging protagonist, eighteen-year old Ruth Thomas, a headstrong young woman who has just returned from boarding school on the mainland.

Ruth is independent, blunt, straight-spoken and often hilariously direct. For all her wit and sarcasm, she's a very appealing character with fiercely-felt emotions and an interesting family background to deal with - as well as a struggle to decide what she should do with her future and of course a love interest...

I thought this was such a delightful, beautifully written book - funny, moving and fascinating - I just couldn't put it down. I was very glad that I hadn't gone with my initial impulse ('ugh, a book about lobsters and fishing') and put it back on the shelf. Instead, I'm definitely going to be looking out for Elizabeth Gilbert's other novels. A brilliant read: well-written, funny and moving.

Average rating of 5/5 fascinating, 2010-07-14
Like a previous reviewer I have been reading Eat, Pray & Love, which my wife also loved. Looking for a birthday present for her, I came across this one. It is certainly not easy to give books, but I am convinced she is going to like it.
Elisabeth Gilbert style of writing is very fluid and focused, so I was neither bored nor distracted reading her account of the life of an extraordinary man, Eustace Conway and his many adventures in Americas wilderness. Here is somebody who has taken self sufficiency to an extreme, not a mere dreamer but a survivor. Very inspiring.
