The book title says it all really, 2002-11-09 This is a great book for first time breastfeeders. Just the right amount of information and you have the security that, coming from the NCT, its going to be accurate, research based information. Every woman coming to breastfeeding for the first time should be issued this book in pregnancy - it covers not only the common things like positioning and how milk is made but also common problems too.

Not meant to be here., 2008-09-06 I rarely review my children's books - but this is one of those few books which is something bit special.
This story of a stranded young alien on Earth is brought to life by excellent artwork. The illustrations perfectly capture the emotive situations, be it a cute image of a vulnerable Beegu cuddled up in a box with abandoned puppies, or the excited Beegu with his massive ears sticking up when encountering playful children.
This is short book, but it is very poignant. It's almost heart-breaking at times, but as it's a children's bed-time story - you know it'll have a happy ending.
This is my first experience of Alexis Deacon, but I'm quite a fan of Oliver Jeffers (see Lost and Found, and The Way Back Home) and 'Beegu' provides that same level of luscious humorous artwork along with a story that makes story-time something for us daddies to look forward to as well.

Excellent!, 2008-02-23 A really good book, which explains via clear colour pictures, and accompanying text how vital foot balance is in the horse.
There are also plenty of before and after shots too, to illustrate the difference a correct trim can make.

Terrence Deacon's The Symbolic Species begins with a question posed by a 7-year-old child: Why can't animals talk? Or, as Deacon puts it, if animals have simpler brains, why can't they develop a simpler form of language to go with them? Thus begins the basic line of inquiry for this breathtakingly ambitious work, which attempts to describe the origins of human language and consciousness. What separates humans from animals, Deacon writes, is our capacity for symbolic representation. Animals can easily learn to link a sound with an object or an effect with a cause. But symbolic thinking assumes the ability to associate things that might only rarely have a physical correlation; think of the word "unicorn," for instance, or the idea of the future. Language is only the outward expression of this symbolic ability, which lays the foundation for everything from human laughter to our compulsive search for meaning. The final section of The Symbolic Species posits that human brains and human language have co-evolved over millions of years, leading Deacon to the remarkable conclusion that many modern human traits were actually caused by ideas. Deacon's background in bio...
A intellectually stimulating and scholarly approach, 2000-04-21 I don't know enough to quibble with Deacon. I'm sure there must be something to criticize but I can't find it. The book provokes me to consider whether a better understanding of specialized languages like mathematics would illuminate more natural and more effective methods of instruction. Certainly the hierarchy of icon, index, and symbol strike a resonant chord in mathematical thought. I read Reuben Hersh's "What is Mathematics, Really?" during the same time frame and find a lot of potential in the interaction between the two lines of thought.

Impress your friends and family....!, 2006-07-27 A wonderful book for a complete novice in cake decorating! Lots of brilliant ideas which look really impressive but are amazingly easy to make and without a piping bag in sight. I keep coming back to it and you really can make a cake that looks like the one in the picture. After the last one I was even told I should go into business........and I promise anyone reading this that I am not a confident cook. Thankyou Carol for dispelling the fear and for all the compliments which I would never have received without your instructions.

I wish I'd read this sooner!, 2008-11-09 This excellent book is an NCT publication aimed at parents of babies aged 0-2. I didn't read it until my son was about 15 months old and had learned most of the contents already by trial and error - and there was a lot of error on the way! I wish I'd had this book from his birth or before as it would have saved a lot of tears and worry. I would have made the same decisions I made anyway, but with a great deal more confidence.
The book is very well-researched with solid statistics behind every recommendation, but it is not prescriptive at all. Everything is presented as an option with the evidence behind it and the reasons it might work, allowing parents to make their own choices for themselves and their child. It empowers parents rather than dictating to them.
I very much enjoyed the chapter headings which include quotes on childcare from the last 200 years. Some things never change and parenting advice goes in and out of fashion all the time. This book isn't about fashionable ideas, but about what works in reality, and I recommend it to all parents.

Imaginative and fun picture book, 2008-04-23 Slow Loris is just pure fun.
Alexis Deacon's pictures are fantastic and different to your bog standard childrens books. They are truly original and not garish in the least. And Slow loris is mint! Fantastically realised, with his deep, dark eyes and little pink fingers. You really get feel for just how slow, the slow loris is. Just one simple motion spread over a series of images shows this perfectly. It even takes an hour to scratch his bottom! People think he is slow and boring, and so do all the other animals in the Zoo. But Slow Loris couldnt care less, because he has a secret..... And when his secret is revealed, the drawing showing it is just great! A complete change of pace and then it gets really funny. There is the old question, just what do zoo animals do when no-one is looking? Slow loris is found out, and everyone joins in the fun. Theres a little bit of "lift the flap" action too. This is very funny, and good enough to be enjoyed again and again! Read the other Alexis Deacon books too! So cool!
