If you have a dog or are planning to buy a dog, this is a very good book for you. It covers everything from why dogs dig holes to their breeding and how to train them.

In the back there is also a big table depicting aggression, sociability and activity of dog breeds, which I have used to buy a dog myself.

You can also assess whether your dog is sociable or not through a quiz at the back, which is a good way of assessing and training your dog better.

To me this book seems very much like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for dogs although it was written before that and is more detailed; it is more like a self help cross body language book on dogs.

The one draw back is that this book tends to go for popular species of dog with its examples and tables in the back and doesn't mention dogs like border collies, which I have

However I would say it is a good investment to educate you in how to deal with dogs. I think it is as essential for dog owners as a book on women is important for wife owners!

Average rating of 4/5 Easy to use and informative, 2002-10-12
This book is good to have if you have a cat and don't feel up to read the very scientific and large books about cat health. The first part tells you what changes you could expect in your cat without anything beeing wrong, and it contains a very neath and easy to follow guide to check your cats health at home. Very usfull!

The second part of this book takes you step by step through what could be wrong if your cat are showing a certain symptom. You follow a path and end up with an answer that fits your cats' condition best. It is then said what might be wrong with your cat and what you should do about it.

I particulary like the fact that this book doesn't give an impresson that the answers are absolute, but just a "might be". This is very handy for the cat owner that might not be educated in cat health and diseases. It keeps you from freaking out totally if the answer is a severe condition, instead it makes you confront your vet with the symtoms.

It's a small book, but a very good one. It's handy, easy to follow and you quickly find what you're looking for. A book worth having in your cat libary, no matter if you have 0 books or 100 books about cats allready.

Average rating of 5/5 The purrfect reference guide, 2004-02-17
Dr. Bruce Fogle’s New Encyclopaedia of the Cat is by far the best on the subject I have ever come across. Brimming with information, photographs and an imaginative and aesthetically pleasing layout, it really is a treat. The opening section contains thirty pages of information about cats and their influence on art, history and religion. Classic artwork, with contributions from Theophile Steinlen and Lucian Freud for example, and full colour images of many other famous works. A selection of maps accurately shows the reader where in the world cat sculptures, pieces of pottery and talisman items have originated. Also included in this section are notes on cats’ influence on world art, stamps, photographs, museum pieces and mythology (a particularly interesting part was that depicting a legendary snake-like creature with a cat’s head, spotted many hundreds of years ago in Italy).

Another large portion of the book covered cat psychology, with pages headed ‘communication,’ ‘social behaviour’ and ‘mating rituals’ to name a few. A later section contains in-depth articles on topics such as genetics, hair growth cycle, physiological processes and the nervous system. One of my favourite pages was that covering eye colours: “The lack of pigment in blue eyes allows higher absorption of sunlight, used by the body to produce vitamin D” (regarding why it is thought Siamese cats originated in northern Asia, as blue-eyes cats are frequently found in light-starved regions.)

The main body of the book (some one hundred and fifty pages) covers cat breeds, with a magnitude of colour photographs to accompany the text. On each page, the reader can discover the history of the breed in question, and a selection of key facts (date of origin, ancestry, weight range and temperament). It is set out in a way that makes it easy to read and understand, whilst at the same time allowing the reader to admire the beautiful photographs of the cats. The final section of the book is devoted to cat care: toys for mental stimulation, types of cat litter, nutrition, maintaining good health, the immune system, grooming and behavioural problems to name just a few. All in all, the encyclopaedia is hugely informative and a pleasure to spend time reading. It’s certainly worth the asking price, too.

Average rating of 5/5 Good All Round Read, 2009-07-04
This book could be filed under so many different headings! A good travel book, a dog story, ancient and modern history - even cookery! I enjoyed Bruce Fogle's previous travel book with Macy in America, and it inspired us to visit Santa Fe. I don't know that we will follow his footsteps again, but I found the book to be fascinating and thought provoking. In years to come this book may be considered a valuable comment on the various countries in rapidly changing times. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Very good book for training dogs - very easily written with superb stage by stage photos - you cannot go wrong with this book. If you want a well behaved dog at home this book is a must buy. There are some other very good books in the market too but this one is right up there.

Average rating of 5/5 try not too worry!, 2010-01-10
This is a great resource for all dog ailments. It is clear concise and very interesting. It has helpful information on diet and ways to keep your dog healthy, prevention is always better then cure and it is invaluable for a first time dog owner like me. The downside is that you enter a world of all the possible things you dog can catch, develop and suffer from, hence my title, so try not to see this book as a spotting guide. All in all a well written and fascinating book.

Average rating of 5/5 If your dog could talk by Bruce Fogle, 2010-01-13
I bought this book early last year and loved it, so much so, I have purchased a copy from Amazon for a Xmas present (2009)for a friend. I have loads of dogs books, but this one is my favourite, because it covers everything an owner would need to know from when a dog mates to when a dog grows old. Fab book!
