Average rating of 5/5 The layman's guide to his or her health, without insulting the intelligence of the reader., 2009-03-15
Having not had an opportunity to watch the TV series of the same name on which this book is based (sadly), I picked up a copy without any presuppositions in regards to it's structure, or indeed aim.

Dr Roberts could easily be accused of imparting to the reader admonitions that amount to common sense in regards to their health; don't smoke, don't take illicit drugs, take alcoholic drinks in moderation, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, be wary of postulated 'miracle cures' and so on and so forth. Yet when buffered with her encyclopedic knowledge of human anatomy (that being her trade), her eloquent writing style and her sense of wit, this book is far more than a condescending do's and don'ts list.

Understanding how your major organs function, and what happens to them when something goes wrong is crucial to gaining a more robust understanding of how to look after yourself. Yet Dr Roberts doesn't overpower the newcomer to her field with a dizzying array of jargon or technical information. She leads us on an informative, yet enjoyable journey through our bodies that is quite easily absorbed and produces a smile on occasion.

Average rating of 4/5 Exceptionally practical and realistic marriage workbook., 2000-09-01
This book can be used as a very helpful tool for engaged Christian couples. It covers not only the foundations of christian marriage, but breaks this down into practical realities.

Each of the 16 short sections ends with a number of questions and exercises, for the couple to discuss through together.

The first section, for example, includes the task of each writing a job description of a husband and a wife!

The book is what it claims to be - a workbook. It makes you work hard, and think for yourself. It does not feed you with trite answers or tell you how you should feel, in the way some christian books can unintentionally do.

I have been using the book with my fiance, and then after going through some sections, going over some of the areas covered with my church minister, to add further perspective and insight into issues raised.

As well as foundational areas, the book covers basic decisions and problem solving, personal and spiritual growth within marriage, honesty in physical relationships before and after marriage, issues about the wedding itself, and four sections deal with issues for after the wedding, including sex and forgiveness.

A very helpful book in an area where very little good material seems to be available.

Average rating of 5/5 A timeless memoir about the road less traveled., 1998-01-02
Like many others, I was lucky enough to discover "We Took to the Woods" in a used book store. From the first page, Mrs. Rich's description of her family's withdrawl from urban life to the peace of the Maine woods transports the reader to another time and place. The long winters spent by the fire with favorite books, the eager anticipation of the monthly mail delivery, the excitement over the first thaw and the opportunity to replenish the barest of larders...her descriptions of everything from her summer and winter homes to the garden and surrounding woods bring you into her world. And is there anyone who after a long day at work and longer trip home doesn't want to turn off the lights and see only stars and treetops overhead? The best bedtime reading, guarantees many nights of sweet dreams.
