Futebol is sub-titled "The Brazilian Way of Life", and if any sport can truly be deemed to be such a thing for any country on the planet, then surely the sport must be football, and the country Brazil. Alex Bellos's study of football in Brazil, its history, its players, supporters and legends, works from the standpoint that Brazilian football is one the modern wonders of the world, "the beautiful game" being an art form in itself and a universally recognised trademark and brand. From such a view, he is able to entertain the reader not only with stories about great players and matches well known by the followers of world football, but also about the unique position of the game in the world's fifth largest country. Thus featured here are not only tales of Garrincha, Socrates and Ronaldo, of Flamengo and Fluminense, but also of football amongst the Indians of the Amazon, Brazilian footballers in the Faroe Islands and the story of the design (and designer) of the famous golden yellow Brazilian shirt, perhaps the most instantly recognisable icon in football anywhere. Where other books investigating the footballing culture of one country might have a more straightforward story to ...
Average rating of 5/5 Wonderful book about wonderful people, 2010-02-08
I must admit, the only reason I bought this book was a search of "Socrates" which lead me to this work from Alex Bellos. I was hoping to garner his views on the game which the foreword really didn't do but the last chapter dedicated to an interview with the great man was brilliant, in my perhaps biased opinion, it alone was worth what I paid for this book.

Bellos takes a deep look at the game in Brazil, he doesn't just detail rivalries and gather the standard 'fan on the corner' opinions, rather he searches for football at its most pure, whether it be in the middle of the Amazon or in the Favelas of Rio.

The result is a unique look at the Brazilian game and at Brazilian life for this book is surely more than a football book, it helps the untrained eye understand the depth of meaning the game has in the country, just how important it became to an infant nation and how Dictator's used it to serve their own purposes.

Some of the material is slightly obscure (pages dedicated to the man who designed the Brazil shirt, a man who incidentally is a mad Uruguay supporter) but the content is truly revealing and told in such a way that it's difficult to put this book down.

This is an absolutely enthralling book. It brings mathematics (and algebra and geometry) to life and is intensely readable. If you are not interested in numbers in any way, shape or form, it might be tough but I have difficulty putting it down. It makes both people and concepts real.
