This book is perhaps a little in depth for those just requiring an introduction to virology. However, I used it extensively during my post graduate studies as it provided excellent background information.
The book is divided into two parts, the first part being principles of of animal virology. this covers topics such as viral structure, classification, replication and pathogenesis. the second part concentrates on the viruses of humans and syndromes they cause.
My only critism is that the fourth edition was published in 1994 and is missing some of the more important recent advances in medical virology particularly those in new molecular detection techniques and antiviral treatment.
Overall the book is well presented, if not understated (no colour pictures) the information is clear and concise making it an important part of any virology library.
