Inspires us to look to nature for solutions, 1999-07-16 Where can we find the best solutions to the many technical, environmental, social and economic problems that beset us?In this wonderful book Benyus shows us that nature can teach us valuable lessons. "In the 3.8 billion years since the first bacteria, life has learned to fly, circumnavigate the globe, live in the depths of the ocean and atop the highest peaks, craft miracle materials, light up the night, lassoo the sun's energy, and build a self-reflective brain...living things have done everything we want to do, without guzzling fossil fuel, polluting the planet, or mortgaging their future. What better models could there be?" By adopting a little humility and treating nature as a model, a measure, and a mentor, she argues, we can catch up on the lessons nature has had millions of years to learn. Benyus writes like an angel, her prose conjuring vivid images as she takes us with her on a journey to explore what Biomimics are doing in material science, medicine, computing, energy, agriculture, and business. Her journalistic style does not shrink from the intricacies of photosynthesis and relishes the wonders of mussel tethering techniques, but always keeps the wider picture in view. I found myself wanting to push the fast-forward button - to the time when prarie-style agriculture is widely adopted; materials are made at room-temperature in life-friendly conditions with no toxicity; and our economy is modelled on a rainforest, not a ragweed. Readers of this book could be those who will help get us there faster. Enjoy!

Useful physics guide when you get beyond the basics, 2004-11-07 As an MR radiographer in the UK I have found this small volume useful. It is not the first MR physics that you should read when starting on this thorny topic but it is a valuable resource once you have got beyond the basics.Brown and Semelka clearly know what they are talking about and cover all the main MR physics concepts.

A comprehensive guide to plant biotechnology, 2003-12-08 This book covers everything you need to know about the applications and methodologies of plant biotechnology. A brilliant and comprehensive aid for undergraduates and MSc students covering the subject for the first time and extremely useful even to researchers who need a breadth of vision in their field. It is written in an interesting style with plenty of general and specific references to the literature. Definitely superior to other such books in this field.

A classic and still the best, 2001-11-25 With over 20 years of editing and corrections behind it this book is quite simply unbeatable as an introduction to biophysics as used by biochemists. It is by no means a specialist text for the techniques covered but rather does not set out to be.Instead each chapter provides a clear and logical primer for a given concept or application. The sample questions with worked answers further aid comprehension of what can be a challenging and confusing topic if handled incorrectly. I have not seen the revised edition but I doubt that it can have found much to improve upon.

Very good background and some basic company info, 2004-06-04 I found this book highly useful for: 1. A clear description on the science and issues. 2. An interesting and quite comprehensive discussion of the plans and prospects for different categories of biotech companies, along with specific details on plans and strategies for many US companies. Some of these are now out of date, but they are still very useful in general. The main weakness is the analysis on how to invest. The author uses moving averages and technical factors when discussing investing in the sector, but spends very little time discussing how to measure fundamental value. Given how difficult it is, presumably he believes you have to have a measure of reasoned faith, diversification, and good timing in order to invest well ! So, if you are looking for a comprehensive introduction to the science and companies in the sector, along with some good examples of successes and failures, this is an excellent start and certainly the best book I have found so far. If you want to delve into valuation issues and already have a decent grasp on the sector, this is not the book.
