An essential reference text for any career virologist., 2001-04-20 This is a reference text and should be available in every virology department. This text describes the classification of viruses, and is updated every few years to take into account the discovery of any new viruses and changes in taxonomy. It is surprisingly readable for what would seem to be a dry book on classification. The pictures and electronmicrographs of each virus are very helpful and the text tends to maintain a standard format, which makes the rather tedious subject easier to absorb. Although it is not a book one would necessarily need to buy, having it at hand is essential for any would-be trainee virologist...

An educational decipherable text on viruses, 2002-11-06 Veterinary Virology is an easily deicpherable book for those of us that must suffer through microbiology on the way to veterinary degrees. This book explains things in simple language, without refuge in the jargon that is so easy for scientific texts to slip into. It is an excelent introduction into virology, (although if you want to learn about West Nile, go somewhere else.) Each chapter sticks to one group of viruses with an introductory section on how that class (genera/family?) replicates in the body, if they require intermediate hosts, etc. and how the virus does damage, and what type of damage occurs. It then continues on with more detail about specific viruses, paying more attention to those viruses which are endemic in the western world, or important for other reasons, such as trade barriers. (There is a nice section on FMD) All in all I highly recomend this book, as it makes understanding virology lectures much easier. Now if only there was as good a book for bacteria...

A useful book for students studying evolution & viruses, 2009-12-18 A great book. Probably the only book i have seen out there which explains the process of viral evolution so thoroughly and clearly. The book provides a holistic view of the mechanisms of viral evolution, and their outcomes, which i have not found in other books. I particularly liked the in-depth examples e.g influenza, hiv, which are very useful for lecturers and students alike. These examples provide an interesting read to all biologists, not just the ones studying viruses.
