Gripping true stories of life-threatening events, 2004-01-18 This is an outstanding book. First-hand true-life recollections of a diverse range of natural disasters across Africa over 3 decades. The authors tell their stories well, putting you right there in the bush. They retain their sense of humanity throughout so you really feel for their patients and their families as human beings. 1 quibble : only towards of the end of the story do they get married; at the very end of the book they both thank their first spouses for their respective sacrifices but you never even get to know their spouses first names what sort of acknowledgement remains anonymous? 2 mysteries : whilst there are plenty of good maps, there are no photos; no pictures of colleagues or patients, and no pictures of the offending Viruses and Bacteria why not? Very good value for money - I've had to pay much more for far lesser books.

The best of its kind, but not for everyone., 2004-09-08 This is the best book about whisky production that I have read. After the reading general books about whisky written by Jackson, Maclean, Murray et al., I was looking for more specific and specialized book about whisky production and was not disappointed at all. It covers all the aspects (in depth !) from whisky production to marketing, for both malt and grain whisky. My only wish would be to have some additional schemes. Like all Elsevier's publication, this book is written for a specialized audience or any Whisky amateur with solid knowledge of whisky production and/or biochemistry.

The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a suburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all true.
NON-FICTION MEDICAL THRILLER..., 2008-02-25 This is a non-fiction book that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, compulsively turning the pages. In it the author gives an education on the possible origins of different deadly hemorrhagic viruses and the devastation that they cause in both animals and humans. The author describes actual outbreaks that occurred between 1967 and 1993. This is done in an engaging, straightforward narrative that reads like a medical thriller.
The nucleus of the story focuses on an outbreak of Ebola virus in Reston, Virginia in the tony county of Fairfax, just outside of Washington, D.C. in 1983. A special, highly trained teamed of Army specialists and scientists secretly converged on that hot spot to try and stop the spread of this deadly virus, as it had a kill rate of ninety percent.
The account that the author gives of the Army's mission is riveting, as is the vivid description of the rain forests and caves of Africa where these hemorrhagic viruses are suspected of originating. The devastation these viruses cause to both animals and humans is horrifying, shocking, and, unfortunately, all too true. The author has managed to make science accessible to the general public and eminently readable. Bravo!

A CONSTRUCTIVE LEARNING METHOD FOR BIOLOGY STUDENTS., 1999-01-23 This publication presents the student of biology with a full introduction to the field of microbiology, followed by an explanation of the terminology used.Being an American publication, some of the spelling is quite different to UK English, but for me, this did not present any problem. In order to get the best out of this book, it is vital that the guidelines and colouring instructions are thoroughly followed as some of the content is very detailed. The authors have researched this learning method well, and clearly aim it at A-level students and above. However, even for the seasoned biologist it would come across as an interesting presentation. Without any hesitation, I would highly recommend The Microbiology Coloring Book to all students of Biological and related subjects. Definately a 'must have'

Scholarly, interesting, well-written and alarming, 2008-01-23 The author is a professor of microbiology who has written an excellent book for the lay-person interested in the struggle between microbes and humans. It's partly a history of the ever-changing balance between the two from early man as a hunter/gatherer to modern urbane life. She makes it very clear how the development of agriculture and the gathering together of people into towns has increased our vulnerability to a greater range of organisms.
At times it reads almost like a war as viruses, bacteria and fungi rapidly mutate and sometimes collaborate to defeat our immune systems. I have a biological background but learned a lot about the latest microbiological research which is revealing just how well these microbes are doing in infecting us to their benefit. After reading this book I feel more alarmed at just how vulnerable we are to new microbes evolving with lethal power, but it also made me think more about how to avoid helping them by,for example, taking unnecessary antibiotics or failing to complete a course of treatment.

Great Textbook, 2006-02-14 This book is great for Microbiology Undergraduates. The layout is perfect for studying and revising, and the information is presented in a clear manner. Doesn't put you to sleep like some other undergrad textbooks. You'll need other books for 2nd and 3rd year, but you will keep refering to this book even then. Overall, a very good textbook. Well worth the price.

A very accessible and useful text, 2004-05-10 As a first-year microbiology undergraduate, I, like many of my peers, did not fully understand the scope of the discipline when I arrived at Leeds University. I was pointed in the direction of this book by my lecturers and demonstrators as my first module was based almost entirely on the book's content.Postgate manages to cover all of the vital components of this broad and expanding subject in an interesting and accessible manner. His use of scientific language is sensible and ordered, explaining any uncommon phrases, which prevents having to reach for the "Dummy's Dictionary of Science" every five minutes, as is the case with many other texts on the subject. I found this text an incredibly easy and well-presented of the basics of the subject. It has helped my understanding no end, and i would recommend it to anyone with an interest in any aspect of microbiology, whether for academic purposes or purely for curiosity's sake.
