Average rating of 5/5 This is the Galápagos wildlife guide you want, 2006-09-05
Andy Swash (photographer) and Rob Still (computer design wizard) have conspired to produce the handiest and most authoritative guide to the wildlife of these enchanted islands. They have pioneered the use of computer enhanced photographs, which combine the advantage of a photograph as an accurate record of an individual, with the artists ability to stress those features that are representative of the species. In one pocket-sized, 168 page, full-colour photographic guide you have all you need to identify almost all of the archipelago's wildlife including every living species of bird, mammal and reptile.

This second edition differs from the first as follows:-

* it includes new species for the islands, such as Green Heron and Grey-headed Gull
* all range maps have been revised and updated
* the cetaceans section has been completely revamped
* a new section on "electronic media" is provided
* the species checklist has been brought right up to date

And since WILDGuides are a non-profit organisation which supports conservation throughout the world, you are helping ensure that the wildlife you enjoy today will still be there for others to enjoy tomorrow. Check out their other titles on Amazon.co.uk, all of which share the enhanced photography approach.

The perfect guide for the curious visitor and expert alike. Look no further!

Average rating of 5/5 Two books on Bats; Jan 2008, 2008-01-21
There are two books on bats by Phil Richardson and both have the same title: "Bats". This has caused a certain amount of confusion and if either of these books are accessed on Amazon, one arrives at the same series of reviews where it is not always clear which book a review refers to. I certainly was confused. Both books are available at present.

The first book was published by Whillet Books in 1985. It was reprinted several times and a revised edition appeared in 2000, which has also been reprinted. It is a very good introduction to bats particularly the 16 species that live in the U.K. The writing is lighthearted and the zany illustrations by Guy Troughton complement the writing excellently. The book is given a very direct feeling by the accounts of the author's hands-on experiences in the field with the Northampton Bat Group. He explains many behaviours but is not afraid to discuss the things that are not understood. If you live in Britain and want an introduction to the bats that live here it is a must.

The second book was published in London in 2002 by the Natural History Museum and reprinted in 2004. This book complements the first excellently but has a completely different feel. Gone is the humour, and the drawings are mainly replaced with excellent photographs. Though British bats have a place, the author looks, mainly, at the differences in behaviour and structure that occur in the 900 odd species that do not occur in the British Isles. Like the first book, echolocation, bat detectors and general construction are considered, but as bats that live in warmer parts of the world do not need to hibernate they can have a very different life style and eat a wider range of food. Almost 1 in 5 of all mammals are bats and if you want an introduction to their diverse world you will not regret buying this book.

No wildlife lover should be without a copy of this extraordinary (but true!) story. It is split into three parts!

Born Free: Follows the life of Elsa as an orphaned lion cub in Kenya until she grows up and is taught on how to be a wild lion.

Living Free: Follows the life Elsa and her three young cubs.

Forever Free: Elsa tragically dies of an illness and her cubs are taken to the Serengeti in Tanzania to be released into the wild.

All took my breath away as I read about, not just the lives of the lions, but of the people around them.

The title of Mapping the Deep suggests that it is primarily about oceanography. Although the extremely interesting history of this subject forms a major element in the book, its broader, richer subject is man's changing relationship with the oceans. Until recently these have been characterised by high-handed ignorance, the oceans seen at once as inexhaustible resource and bottomless dump. Robert Kunzig remarks that politicians and science writers seem to be most interested in space exploration, whereas the real story is closer at hand--in the oceans. The symbolic goals of space exploration are easier to understand than the endlessly complex ecology of the deep oceans or the mysteries of the great currents that circle the globe and control its weather. Yet, as Kunzig demonstrates, the oceans are where the future of mankind may be determined. It is now widely accepted, for example, that global warming may precipitate a sudden, massive realignment of the ocean currents, an event certain to have vast but unforeseeable consequences. The climatic catastrophes attendant on the relatively minor disturbance known as El Nino give an idea of what may be in store.

Robert Kunzig won the Aventis Science Book of the Year award for Mapping the Deep.In my opinion it is the best science book written in the last ten years.Scientists know so little about the ocean and most of them know little about how to communicate what they do know to the layman.Kunzig takes their limited knowledge and conveys the great beauty and mystery of the oceans to the reader.

Average rating of 5/5 Great book and CD combo, 2003-08-27
At 56 pages, this little book is a mine of information about bats. It is supplied with a 48-track CD of bat detector sounds of 13 of the 16 species of bats living in Britain today, as well as tones for calibrating your bat detector - very handy for complete beginners and enthusiasts alike.

I was amazed by the first two pages in the book, called Bat Facts: for example, did you know that bats account for a quarter of all mammal species in the world, and make up half of our mammal population in Britain? If you love bats, this is great news. If not, bolt your windows!

The rest of the book describes how to identify the kind of bats you are likely to encounter near your home. Briggs and King emphasise that it is fascinating detective work (hence the name of the book). Of course, the ultrasonic echolocation sounds that bats create to hunt for prey, brought into the human hearing range by various kinds of bat detectors, are the main clue, but there are many others described for each bat in the book - where they fly, how they fly, and where they tend to roost.

There are three kinds of bat detector, and this book and the CD of recordings of typical echolocation calls, assume you have the heterodyne type, most common among enthusiasts and beginners. The book describes in simple detail how to develop the skill to interpret what you are hearing on a heterodyne detector.

Bats are everywhere, and you have may rare bats living near you, particularly if you live in the West Country. My family have found a fantastic new hobby, and this book is a really good starting point. I wish it had all 16 UK bats (we do in Somerset), but I still give it 5 stars.

An easy to read, clearly written book in digestible chapters, although based on American collections of animals. A good reference book for people working with wild animals or those interested in captive wild animals.

Average rating of 5/5 The best in the field, 2008-02-19
Like another reviewer, I first came across this book whilst on safari. This is the book that the guides use. Not all guides, only the best ones in my admittedly limited experience of 9 safaris. Having said that, this is not a book aimed at somebody who wants to simply know what animal they are looking at. There are lots of field guides that do that far better, and have colour illustrations as well.
This is a book for those who have already got past the identification stage and are interested in understanding the behaviour of the animals they are watching. If that is what you want to do, this is the book for you.
