A "must" for all ornithological travellers to Africa, 2003-12-01 While I fully agree with the previous reviewer as to the variable quality of some illustrations, I still give this monumental work five stars. The mere fact that we now have a book that depicts all the species within the vast area covered in a decent way deserves praise. This would hardly have been economically possible without the recourse to the illustrations from previous field guides. At any rate, the book gives the intended most welcome overview. For those areas with good regional field guides, it makes sense, of course, to concentrate on those books. By necessity, the texts in the present book are very short; but they are informative. The range maps do not differentiate by season; there are brief infos in the text, however.

This is the book for anyone from children to professionals., 1998-12-14 My son became fascinated with reptiles and amphibians at around age 4. This book has helped us both tremendously to understand and identify creatures all around us. We have devoured books of all types at our local library and we keep coming back to this one. The pictures are fabulous and easy enough for a child to use. The text is informative and well presented. My son will be thrilled to find this book under the Christmas tree this year!

Helm Field Guides: Waders of Europe, Asia and North America, 2006-02-06 Helms new field guide covers 125 species of waders in a little over 220 pages and is divided into three sections Introduction, Waders at rest and Waders in flight. The 25 page introduction covers many field guide standards such as bird topography, moult, plumage variation and behaviour. It includes a number of useful identification tips and is liberally scattered with Steves illustrations including some particularly pleasing looser paintings depicting aspects of wader behaviour. The waders at rest section consists of 45 double page spreads each covering two to four species. The text is concise and starts with a few key ID features before covering behaviour, habitat, plumage and confusion species. Most potential purchasers will look at the illustrations first and this is where the guide scores highly. The large image size and uncluttered design of the plates makes them a joy to browse through or grill intensely. Steve Message has done an excellent job at illustrating a very difficult group of birds and has produced some of the best field guide plates of recent times. The in flight section gives upper- and under-wing illustrations and brief notes covering key ID features, flight action, voice, distribution and confusion species as well as distribution maps. It finishes with two appendices that tabulate upper- and under-part flight patterns. This is a very good guide for anyone who wants to take their shorebirding to a new level and will certainly help you identify a Bairds Sandpiper in Hampshire or a Bar-tailed Godwit in New Hampshire.

Invaluable, 2008-02-17 This is an ideal companion to the usual kind of field guide. Beautifully and clearly illustrated, "Identifying Birds by Behaviour" lets you compare species at a glance with invaluable hints to help you differentiate between birds which are superficially alike. It illustrates clearly things like relative size and subtle variations in plumage, and best of all it gives good indications of movement and flight patterns. This book provides a level of insight that would take the weekend birdwatcher years in the field to match, and it also draws your attention to details that you might otherwise have overlooked, thus enhancing your enjoyment of birds. A gem.

A wonderful bird book but is it a field guide?, 2003-01-16 Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania is a wonderful reference book of East African birds. Its Comprehensive, informative and brilliantly illistrated, but.............I do wonder about its usage as a field guide for two main reasons. Firstly, its not the cheapest publication in its subject area and though the hardback version is undoubtedly robust, if you love your books as I do, then packing it, unpacking it and thumbing through it on safari might cause you to wince a little. Secondly, its a heavy publication and not for the faint hearted on a bird walk, particularly if your going to juggle binoculars, camera and note book as well. I certainly want it on my library shelf but will use it alongside smaller, lighter but less comprehensive publications in the future, Perhaps the paperback version offers a more useful option in the field.
