Truly excellent, 2007-07-10 As a casual reader with an interest in spiders, I find this book brilliant, informative, and comprehensive. As a seller of academic books, I know that no other book on the subject comes close to the quality of this one.

An excellent guide, 2006-08-14 No butterflies or moths but there is a separate guide available to cover those groups. This seems a reasonable decision when publishing in a pocket-sized format as a combined guide would mean that only half the number of species could be covered.
The information in the guide is clear and concise with good quality photographs for every entry. There are also illustrations on many entries that clarify those anatomical differences important for identification of the species or sex.
A fascinating guide that's been invavluable for me in my new found hobby of macro insect photography.

Great Little Book, 2007-01-27 I bought this book when we moved to a new house with a large established garden which seemed to attract lots of butterflies. It has been a great help finding out which ones are which and good fun too getting my daughter involved as well. Great pictures and photographs and an easy to follow method of identifying butterflies and moths. Well worth the small amount of money paid.

A handy little guide, 2004-07-27 This is a nice little book. Its compact size make it ideal to pack if you are making the long trip to Oz - I bought it for a colleague of mine who's emmigrating, and he was delighted. The layout is clear and concise and the photography is particulary good - although probably not recommended for arachnophobes! The facts are well presented, and topics such as spiders with poisonous bites are treated without sensationalism. All in all a good book for a fair price.

Disappointing :-(, 2006-04-10 I recently bought this little book to try to find out about the spiders I come across in the countryside, in my garden, & in my home!I was really disappointed with it, as although the book is pocket size & easy to slip into a rucksack to take on a walk, unfortunately, it is DIFFICULT TO USE. It's the categorisation that makes it so UN-useable: spiders from all over the world (from the same families but) that look very different are listed together, & there is no quick reference to help you pick out the European from the rest of the world. Also British spiders are not specifically categorised. Most disappointingly, many of the pictures are very poor: indistinct & blurred, & their tiny size acerbates the problem. I have yet to locate a spider in the book that I've seen in real life, apart from a very poisonous Australian one that I saw many years ago! I was particularly disappointed as I have other Pocket Gems that are much more practical to use: such as the one on Mushrooms, which is clearly categorised & has excellent pictures. My disappointment is so great that this is the 1st book that I've felt strongly enough about to consider returning, & the 1st time I've written a review (since there are no others to warn people). On the plus side: it does seem to contain many of the world's spiders!
