A better understanding, 2004-09-26 I would recommend this book to anyone who has cats. It really does promote a better understanding of what your furry friend does and why.I bought this specifically to see if there was any advice regarding my cat's behaviour and was grateful to find out not only was there some helpful advice but a lot of information that I hadn't come across before. David Taylor is a fine writer, his experience as a vet (to some very exotic species!) has given him a wider insight into the feline world, and using short anecdotes from his working life gives a light humourous touch. The best thing about this book is that it is very comprehensive given it's size. Where some books obviously concentrate on kittenhood and the early development stages to exclusion of later life this includes a lot more on the ageing process, physical and mental. It's also the first book I've come across that has given detail on how cats grieve on losing a beloved friend, be it a human or another cat. All of this is tremendously helpful if you have older cats and want to be able to understand the changes from there former, more lively, selves. Overall I'd say that this will prove to be an invaluable book, it covers so much and explains in detail. A small caveat regarding this edition: there are a few typos and repetitions scattered through the chapters. It doesn't detract from the writing but it can be a little irritating if you are reading the entire book rather than just a relevant chapter or two.

Stephen Budiansky

Prepare to have any illusions about your canine companion totally shattered. In writing The Truth About Dogs, author Stephen Budiansky (The Nature of Horses) is determined to uncover the true nature of our beloved beasts, and it's not always a pretty picture. The introduction presents a basic question: why on earth have we allowed these disease-carrying, biting, destructive and expensive animals into our lives? We know why--it's because we love them, warts and all. So does Budiansky, and once you read past his inflammatory introduction, you will find a book that presents a new way of looking at old behaviours. His insistence on the recent evolution of separate breeds, even those generally considered to have originated centuries ago like the Mexican hairless, is sure to be controversial. His interpretation of recent behavioural research may raise some hackles as well and begins with an examination of pack behaviour in wolves. While wild packs have only one dominant male and female, we often expect our dogs to behave submissively to an extended family of dominants--not only can that be difficult, but some of their natural "submissive" behaviour can be extremely frustr...
Excellent book for all genuine dog lovers., 2005-12-05 I have made several business trips to Japan in the past 10 years. The first time I went I was thoroughly unprepared, but before my second trip I bought and read "Culture Shock Japan" - a splendid book which set me straight - even to the point of my Japanese contacts telling me - "You are much better this time, Mark-San. Last time you were like Western Folk Musician!" [not a compliment I suspect...]This book is in the same league. I have only just read it - having had the privilege of knowing Amber (a Golden Retriever) for 15 years (she died a few months ago) - and I am sure I would have been a better and more understanding owner had I found the book 16 years ago! Please get this book for ALL your doggy friends - especially for the newer owners.

'Some' biology, not 'the' biology, 2008-03-05 This is not the book implied by its title. It is not a chapter by chapter account of domestic cat behaviour, but the edited proceedings of a symposium of cat behaviour specialists. These are accessible to lay people, but some papers are too full of statistics to be of interest to the average cat fanatic, and others which (a bit like some human sociological reseach!) make you think, 'But it didn't need research to tell me that'. And as the editors say in their introduction, 'This second edition covers more, but not all, aspects of domestic cat behaviour and ecology'. As someone who bought the book in the hope of a full and detailed guide, I find myself therefore a little disappointed.

Invaluable, 2008-02-17 This is an ideal companion to the usual kind of field guide. Beautifully and clearly illustrated, "Identifying Birds by Behaviour" lets you compare species at a glance with invaluable hints to help you differentiate between birds which are superficially alike. It illustrates clearly things like relative size and subtle variations in plumage, and best of all it gives good indications of movement and flight patterns. This book provides a level of insight that would take the weekend birdwatcher years in the field to match, and it also draws your attention to details that you might otherwise have overlooked, thus enhancing your enjoyment of birds. A gem.

Ultimate in general pet behaviour., 2001-09-23 Concentrating on canine and feline behaviours, this text is a valuable source of reference for the pet behaviour therapist and the animal science student (as I once was). Divided and subdivided into easily manageable sections, this text explains the behaviour as normally seen, progressing onto behaviour deviations and then to tried and tested methods of behaviour rectification (some acceptable, others not). It includes many marvellous references to studies conducted by those such as Borchelt, Voith, Houpt and Overall.

A wonderful book!, 2002-01-03 This is a fantastic book written in a friendly manner as though the author is engaged in conversation with the reader. Jeffrey Masson adopts three dogs to give himself "a pack" and then examines the emotional behaviour of these animals in particular, and researches and recounts tales of others. This is a fascinating and heart-warming book written by a man with a real sympathy with dogs and a true love of the canine species. A good read leaving the reader with plenty of food-for-thought.
