Average rating of 3/5 Wide ranging, good colour plates, but slightly superficial., 2001-11-03
This book covers a wide range of Salmonid conditions, classified according to cause. It introduces the reader to histopathology with a chapter on normal histology of the teleost at the beginning, and numerous well reproduced histopathology slides in colour. Remaining chapters subdivide the conditions by aetiological origin, covering bacterial, viral, parasitic and environmental influences on salmonid culture. The authors bring a wide range of knowledge to the book and indeed it can be seen as an ideal starting place for the veterinarian facing aquaculture for the first time. However whilst the aetiolgical basis of the diseases are well covered, the diagnostic requirements are sparse and treatment modalities completely absent. The histopathology incorporated in the book gives the reader a basic idea of teleost histology and histopathology, however it is not a reference book for those wishing to develop their skills in histopathological diagnosis of salmonid diseases.
In general a good addition to the bookshelf of the fish health veterinarian, or paraclinician working in the salmonid fish health area, that provides a good, rapid first consultation but is not indepth enough to take the reader beyond the more superficial aspects of the various conditions. I would gladly have paid more had the book delved in more depth into the histopathology, diagnosis and management of the conditions.
