Monkey Portraits, 2007-10-04 This is a great book full of...monkey portraits. Most of the monkeys have been used in various films and commercials and their credits are noted in the back of the book. The style of photography is pretty unique, almost as if it is rendered in paint or another media and it is wonderful to see the expressive faces of these beautiful creatures. There are some wonderful natural poses, where the artist has captured the personality of the monkey, and others (where the monkey has been trained to) where the subject is posing for the picture. Although these are less satisfying than the natural poses, they are still full of charm. Animal rights campaigners will worry about using animals is studios like this for art, rather than taking shots in the wild. I tend to agree natural, wild shots are more satisfying to view, but that doesn't take away from some wonderful photography and animal portraiture in this book. Worth a look if you're interested in primates and have many other books on the topic.

Rupert Sheldrake
By Arrow Books Ltd
It's rare for a book's title to say so clearly what the book is about. In the case of Rupert Sheldrake's latest work, the controversial content is right on the front cover. Pet owners will see it and smile in recognition; sceptical scientists will shake their heads and mutter about "maverick scholars." We all know of cases of dogs (and cats) who know when their owners are coming home, who go to wait at the door or window 10 minutes or more before their human arrives. Conditioned by the tight rigour of contemporary scientific thinking, we either look for rational explanations or we file the phenomenon away in our minds as "unexplained" and are careful not to talk about it to our scientist friends. Sheldrake, famous for his theory of morphic resonance, has shown in the past that he is not afraid to be labelled a maverick. He accepts that the case histories he details so thoroughly in this book are anecdotal, but that makes them no less real; and as a scientist himself he sets up experimental conditions for studying this previously ignored phenomenon, which show beyond any doubt that the phenomenon exists. He castigates traditional scientists for their refusal to countena...
Making science a quality social experience, 2008-02-25 Sheldrake makes scientific inquiry not just adventurous and rigorous, but also playful and friendly. His experiments are designed to involve many people in testing theory after theory to account for animal behavior. How do pets know when the vet is coming? How do animals anticipate earthquakes? How do they know to give up waiting by the door, when their owners change plans and postpone coming home?
Sheldrake's experiments, surveys and documentation always prove entertaining. With Sheldrake, science becomes a community experience, open to all who are curious and willing to put their minds together.

Wildlife of Costa Rica by Carrol Henderson, 2008-01-19 For those, like myself, who like to see all the wildlife of an area this book is excellent. It gives wide coverage of common birds and mammals, and more limited coverage of reptiles, insects etc. Included are colour photos, identification points, animal statistics and maps showing where the creatures were seen on previous group tours. I wish a similar book existed for other places I have visited.
It is large for a field guide but ideal as a reference book for non specialists.

Best of it's type, 2005-11-16 For divers who are keen to spot the differences between two very similar species of fish, this is the best book on the market. Although no one book ever covers everything, this one does it's best to show the minor variations within fish families and even points out how to look for a defining feature. All main fish groups are included and the book is entirely photographic.

A good introduction, 2008-07-16 If you are new to the subject, as I am, you should find this a good summary of people and developments in British ornithology over the centuries. The style is readable and well paced.
I agree that some of the illustrations are make-weights, but suspect this is the fault of the publisher rather than the author.

The best for southern parts of South America, 2007-10-04 One of the best and most user firendly bird book: small, thin but still full of information and excellent illustrations. Probably the best for birds in the Andes. If every field guide would be as good as this, I would be happy.
No less, than five stars.
