Absolutely Ingenious., 2009-01-03 This is Professor Dawkins' finest piece of work. Not only does he provide his own knowledge and ingenious thinking, but he also ties together the works of Darwin, Hamilton, Fisher, Trivers, and many other great revolutionary Evolutionary Biologists. As a Geneticist, I have studied many of the phenomena that Dawkins discusses, and it is amazing that science has uncovered many of them as late as 30 years after the first publication of this great book.
It is not just Genetics which has had components perfectly explained by this text, but also many other branches of Evolutionary Biology, such as Ethology and Molecular Evolution. A wonderful read, explained so simply and eloquently by arguably the world's greatest Popular Science writer; a book that Carl Sagan himself would have been proud of writing.
Dobzhansky once famously and correctly stated that 'Nothing in Biology makes sense except in the light of Evolution' ; I would go one step further, and state that 'Nothing in Evolution makes sense except in the light of Gene Selection'. Once one has read this book fully, and understood it properly, this statement can be fully appreciated.

A Superb Guide to Birds of Prey, 2008-08-30 As an owner of many great Collins guides, this one is know exception, some great illustrations and text describing all the Birds of prey in Europe, although like the previous review it does make you go back and forth to view each species it is however very comprehensive.
I would recommend this book to every avid bird of prey enthusiast

If you only ever read one book - make it this one., 2007-07-28 It is hilarious - it is sad - how can you cry and laugh at the same time? Read about the Kakapo!
I bought and read this book the week it was released. I quoted from it this afternoon. My 6 year old son asked me about Kimodo dragons - he wants one for his birthday - I could explain exactly why I was saying no. I think that although this book is over 15 years old it is extremely relevant to today. We must learn about our disappearing world - this is the easiest, funniest and most painless ways to do it. I hope Douglas and Mark were as proud of this book as I am of their writing it. Every week we lose hundreds of species - I'm not the conservation gestapo, however I do think more about what I do to the world since I read this book. Maybe you will too.

Best for Birds , 2008-12-29 This is the warm, authorative but friendly book of British birds that every bird lover needs. It covers each distinct type of bird and has plenty of interesting facts and anecdotal stories to lift it above being a stuffy encyclopaedia of birds. The pictures and illustrations are perfect for the book. Highly recommended.

An excellent bird guide, 2006-02-04 This is the book that I reach for before I go to sleep to review some of the birds that I have seen throughout the day - an amazing wealth of information is crammed into a page, and each page is dedicated to a bird. The drawings and artwork are OK, not up to Collins standards, and it would not be my first choice for a field guide, but for some interesting factual information about species that I have encountered. This is the one, and worth having just for that. I love it, and think that the RSPB have a very good and effective range of books out at them moment.

This is an excelent book for origami beginners, 2001-05-22 My brother bought this book when he was 6, and because of it is now an origami fanatic. What's more, as the instructions were so straight forward to follow, the whole family has joined in the craze of paper folding! I would fully recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn basic origami, and begin to make beautiful decorations!

A delightful little book, 2008-09-23 At first I thought this book was just going to be one of those annoying tomes written by someone who has got all smug because they have escaped the rat race, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The author works for the famous BBC natural history unit and has travelled the world filming and making natr=ure documentaries, but I get the imprssion that he is never happier than when he is at or near home, finding new revelations amongst the commonplace at home.
It has certainly sharpened my appetite, not just to see birds but to basically keep my eyes and ears open when out and about because there is certainly a bustle in the hedgerow, in case you don't know.
