As a biology student I brought this book to supplement the phycology aspects of the course. Its been a good book, readable, the diagrams are particularly impressive clarifying points well. All of the major groups of algae are covered in great detail (probably more than I needed for a biology course, it would be more suitable for a specialist course unless you have a particular interest in algae)and there are some interesting points about evolutionary history. A good course book although perhaps not bed-time reading!
