Average rating of 5/5 The equivalent to two years of viticulture school!, 1998-12-18
I agree that this text could use an update, especially on the newer varieties of grapes which have been developed in the past decade, however this text will make you a vintner if you read it in depth and acquire some "hands on" experience to go with it. The text is high quality print, and mine is covered with plastic and accompanies me often in the vineyards. It's focus is on the California industry but it is also a good guide for the northeastern USA and rest of the world.

Average rating of 5/5 Modern Arboriculture, 2006-02-24
A Great book for those wanting to learn about how trees work. Alex Shigo makes complex matters very easy to understand and is perhaps the greatest champion for the cause of tree care alive. He is passionate about his subject and immensely well informed. His passion for trees is infectious.
On the down side... it is pricey (depending on how you value knowledge) and lacks the production finesse of the bigger publishers. Shame really, because SUCH an important book should be more widely available. Dr. Shigo's pic are basic but easy to follow. The book isn't very cohesive though. Reads like a lot of well written pamphlets.
A must have, if you can afford it! I sincerely hope that one day it will get the make over it more than deserves and gets published by a bigger publishing house with mechanism to make it more... more.

Average rating of 5/5 essential if you work with scientific plant names, 2007-07-27
For anyone working with scientific names of plants, this is an essential tool. It gives you the scientific name for many a common name. At family level it gives you synonymy, technical details such as systematic position and main characters, it tells you numbers of genera and main uses. At genus level, it gives you synonymy, similar details for the more important genera, numbers of species, main uses (used as copper indicator in Russia; suitable for marmalade) or interesting little snippets (often found on greenhouse floors; hollow twigs inhabited by ants) plus comments on relationships, chromosome numbers etc. This is, as it states on the title page, 'a portable dictionary of the higher plants'. It is a goldmine.
My room is filled with books on plants; this is one of the books that has to be at hand at all times. In fact, I have two copies - one at home, one at work. A great little volume.
