William B. Mccloskey
By International Marine
If you have ever eaten a fish or crab, then read this book!, 1999-02-22 This is a superb book. McCloskey writes from such a deep base of personal experience, that within a few lines we are transported to the heaving, noisy and often foul-smelling deck of a rusty trawler pitching in a cold northern sea or the cramped camaraderie of the galley on a Japanese squid boat. You feel the shudder of the steel deck as the boat pitches into a steep swell, taste the salt in the air and gag on the stench of diesel fumes and dead fish. The book is a collection of essays, exploring the challenges that face commercial fishermen in various parts of the globe. We hear lots of languages - Russian, English, Spanish, Norwegian, Japanese and more - and experience very different cultures, each united by the sea and the grueling task of pulling food from its depths. Gradually, the similarities grow much larger than the differences. No matter where he is, McCloskey can rapidly blend into the crew becoming just one more figure shrouded in foul weather gear pulling in the nets. This remarkable desire to muck-in with the deckhands no matter how hard the work or how severe the conditions, is the secret to his vivid and exciting writing. I can never look at a piece of sushi or a bag of fish and chips in quiet the same way.

An all round informative book, 2001-04-01 This is a super book, which outlines all the essentials that you need to know about keeping koi, such as koi care, maintainace and the garden pond. The Japanese names are explained well, so the novice koi keeper will gain a good grasp of the terminology of these wonderful fish. There are colourful pictures of koi, gardens and ponds, all of which are of a high quality. This is a must for the collection.

A readable guide to the various methods of rearing trout, 2000-12-31 The author has worked in the trout rearing industry in Europe and North America, and has drawn on his experience to produce a very readable guide to the various methods of breeding and raising trout for the table or angling re-stocking. Suitable for those with either a general or professional interest. Rather expensive for a 160 page paperback in A5 size but there are not many good books on this subject around.

Basil Lubbock
By Brown, Son and Ferguson, Ltd
The most thorough work on these ships., 2007-08-01 Basil Lubbock (1876-1944) was a man of the sea who wrote many fine books about ships of the 19th Century. In so doing he had a way of bringing each subject alive and was always able to give the reader that certain extra ingredient which modern writers on this subject lack. Perhaps it was because he understood each type of ship from the period - after all, he did sail round the Horn before the mast as an ordinary seaman on a four-masted barque, and that from a man who was educated at Eton and later won an MC during the Great War.
Personally, I think his skills as a writer arose from a combination of supremely thorough research and his many interviews with those who had worked on or around these ships at the time in question.
Put simply, "The Arctic Whalers" is an excellent book. It tells the story of how these seemingly frail boats withstood all that nature could throw at them as they went in search of Whales and Seals. It is the story of the ships and the men who manned them and only when you have finished this book will that story be complete for each individual reader.
