A handy book for beginners to have around, 2000-10-17 This is a fairly basic book but does give some excellent advice, particularly on lambing presentations. Having farmed sheep now for 5 years, I feel this book tends to cover the 'nice' side to sheep farming and often doesn't get down to the nitty-gritty. However, having said that, when I first started to farm sheep I hardly put the book down as there was always something I wanted to know. It really is an 'introduction' and within 2 years I felt I'd 'outgrown' it. One of the best features of the book is that it is presented in wipe-clean hard back, which is great because the times you'll really need it are the times when you're covered in mud and blood ! For the beginner, it's a 'must-have' for lambing time. Happy farming !

Interesting little book, 2007-09-12 Looking at the two negative reviews (not counting the would-be funny one) I am rather surprised by them. Perhaps the problem is the title which suggests you will be getting a down to earth practical handbook about keeping ducks instead of a rather nice little book with plenty of useful information but also material for those who already are interested in and enjoy learning a bit about ducks. It's not (as suggested) full of anecdotes about the author's ducks, although it has a chatty style a bit like someone writing you a letter. It does tell you how to get going in an informal way, how to look afer your ducks, tells you various types of ducks and their characteristics, and gives attractive pictures. Sure, it's not an encyclopedia of duck keeping but for me it made an extremely nice and very acceptable gift, and I would recommend it for this purpose.

Once you pick this up you will not put it down, 2004-01-08 This is a beautiful book and of all the natural horsemanship ones i have come across it is the best for many reasons. It is well written, easy to understand, and beautifully illustrated with many photographs.I believe the author truly loves horses and is not just in the horseworld for financial gain.No equire book shelf would be complete without it.Check out the author riding a young horse for the first time with a rope round its neck ! (the horses neck not the author - truly magical - EnJOY!

number 5 - a new breed of war time tales, 2006-09-09 World War Two has begun and James Herriot who enlisted for the RAF has been called up. Leaving his new wife behind he heads off to London for the initial part of his training which includes lots of marching, running and other activities to make them fit for the forces. The book isn't really about what happens to him while in the forces but we do get snippets of it, mostly the more jovial ones. Most of the time he uses a memory from the forces as a launch pad into a story from his time as a vet.
Still funny as ever but this foray into the life of James Herriot tugs a little more at the heartstrings as it takes us back to a time of human suffering and camaraderie that only war can bring about. More first rate stuff by Mr Herriot!
