Average rating of 5/5 Life-saving and life-changing, 2008-08-22
It would be no exaggeration to say that this book helped to save my life. If I hadn't read this book I would probably have carried on drinking. If I had carried on drinking it would have killed me sooner or later. It's also true to say that this book helped to change my life in some very positive ways. It pointed me towards the Twelve Step programme and explained to me how to use it. I've never been happier than I am now and I'm much better at dealing with setbacks nowadays. As another reviewer said, this book is the real deal.

This is a must have textbook for paediatrics for medical students. From what I've heard it's pretty much the recommended text in most places, and for good reason!
All the information you need to know is written out in simple English. The chapters focus on the important conditions within the different systems as well as other additional information that is pertinent in the field. eg. child protection and genetics

Worth every penny and is bound to get you through exams.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent Text, 2008-08-18
This book continues the excellent tradition maintained by the Oxford Handbook series. The book is clearly set out and presents the information in a clear succinct form. I feel this is a must have book for anyone working within paediatrics and offers a text which can be referred to while on-call. It will also be relevant to those preparing for postgraduate examinations.

Average rating of 5/5 The best introduction to ECGs., 2006-02-18
On first reading, the ECG seemed slighlty clearer, a little bit more understandable. The book starts with clear first principles without being too complicated. On second reading I started start to understand some of the different CV pathologies and their respective ECGs. Then after a break of two years and a third reading, thought I was back at square one. Then on reading number four it all clicked into place - its a bit like riding a bike. So buy it....but don't expect miracles, it may take several readings to grasp the concepts intuitively but once you've got them, they really stick - then you just need to practice.

Average rating of 5/5 A must read for the medical and non-medical alike, 2008-04-20
In his second book Gawande turns to issues more of public health. That's not to say it's devoid of his surgical experience, but now in addition we get the interesting public health aspects to medicine from the relentless "washing hands" to eradicating polio in India. The essays again have their perfect blend of anecdote and academia and anybody regardless of their medical experience will gain immensely from reading this. His essay on the bell curve is truly inspiring thinking, and whilst the original concept was not his there are few better able to articulate it. Whilst his last book, though scholarly was more action packed, this edition takes a more academic approach and though it may be as tense we get much welcomed insights from the public health side.
