Average rating of 5/5 Great for 1st year BSc Sport / Human Biology - Comprehensive, 2008-05-14
I have just finished by 1st year BSc Human biology and found this book very useful.... Great for general physiology themes as well as sports physiology. I even used it for information on a bomb calorimetry report!

Really useful information at the end of each chapter with detailed referencing and CD rom guide with reference lists you can print.... therefore great for searching original sources.

I cannot imagine you would be dissapointed with this purchase. It's an investment!

Average rating of 5/5 A must read for the medical and non-medical alike, 2008-04-20
In his second book Gawande turns to issues more of public health. That's not to say it's devoid of his surgical experience, but now in addition we get the interesting public health aspects to medicine from the relentless "washing hands" to eradicating polio in India. The essays again have their perfect blend of anecdote and academia and anybody regardless of their medical experience will gain immensely from reading this. His essay on the bell curve is truly inspiring thinking, and whilst the original concept was not his there are few better able to articulate it. Whilst his last book, though scholarly was more action packed, this edition takes a more academic approach and though it may be as tense we get much welcomed insights from the public health side.

Average rating of 5/5 The B in CBT, 2008-05-17
Whilst Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) may be all the rage it must be acknowledged that the Behavioural bit often seems to be playing second or even third fiddle to the Cognitive bit of the title. Yet when it comes to that classic therapeutic comment "I understand what you're saying but it doesn't feel right?" otherwise known as the 'head/heart divide' you can't beat a good behavioural experiment: or as better therapists have said 'you don't have to believe me, test me'. This invaluable book (I know it has been said before) really is one of a kind, written by some of the best CBT practitioners currently working in the UK it is a resource that any therapist should have to hand. Covering a wide range of psychological disorders/ difficulties that clients present with; it offers practical, robust experiments that can be collaboratively agreed upon with the client to explore, challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs, schemas and outcome predictions that are causing the individual psychological distress. A gem of a book. One of the few on the bookshelf in my practice which really is dog eared and in regular use (and so often 'borrowed' by colleagues of all therapeutic persuasions I should put a chain on it.

Average rating of 5/5 A lot of common sense, 2007-08-13
This book makes sense of the chemistry of the human body. After only 3 weeks of drinking filtered water with added 'bleach' I have shed almost a stone, and feel better than I have done for years. It takes a little forward planning to maintain an interesting diet based on salads, but the clean fresh feeling inside is well worth it. Minimising sugary fruits also makes sense if one is suffering from a yeast infected gut, but with tomatoes, avocados, lemons, cherries and limes as recommended, and apples as acceptable, eating fruit is not a thing of the past. The book makes for good reading, especially the case testimonies.

Average rating of 5/5 If you think you have OCD buy this book!, 2003-08-18
If you have recently discovered you have ocd like myself and your symptoms are not so severe that you can still function you must get this book...I have suffered from ocd for 10 years and in less than 2 weeks I feel better already, the Cognitive behaviour therapy techniques used in the book can be used instantly to change your life. Very straightforward and easy to use, it gets you to write down your obsessions and compulsions thereby releasing them from your mind and onto the paper, and its a lot cheaper than paying a therapist! A good accompaniement is Ian Osborn's "tormenting thoughts and secret rituals"....the only minus side of the book is that they do push medication as almost a neccessity...be cautious...It isn't

Average rating of 5/5 A must have for a Sheffield Medical Undergraduate!, 2004-03-31
A very detailed and well structured text on pathology. Written by the professor of pathology at Sheffield - it pretty much covers everything on the pathology curriculum here. The introductory chapters are also very useful and include such topics as the causation of disease etc. Very descriptive and very well written. You will need to supplement this with a good clinical medicine book (such as kumar and clark) to simplify things a little!!

Average rating of 5/5 Strongly Recommended, 2006-01-29
Unquestionably this book is core reading material for assisting students and newly qualified therapists alike. Its systematic and logical approach clearly guides the reader through step by step without any complications. Many of my physio colleagues can only praise the author for this and all her other editions. The subjective and physical examination chapters sufficiently contain all the necessary criteria for the initial and follow up assessments with comprehensive literature and illustrations. The extensive use of photographic images for every joint test and assessment technique not only visually stimulates the reader, but also makes it so much easier to perform the techniques. The appealing presentation and layout suggest the book is very reader friendly and is one of the better therapy publications on the market.
