Average rating of 5/5 Excellent book for self hypnosis, 2008-02-11
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist - this book is the first one on the list of books I recommend to anyone interested in self-hypnosis. I consider it one of the best books on self-hypnosis. It is very well written and it covers vast range of topics whether you desire to lose weight, stop smoking, increase self-confidence, manage pain, reduce stress or just about anything else.

If you happen to be one of those who find this book too challenging or advanced and are looking just for some scripts you can use, you may also check out Instant Self-Hypnosis: How To Hypnotize Yourself with Eyes Open.

Average rating of 5/5 Essential in A and E, 2005-12-27
Great reference for SHO/Registrar/ENP in A and E. It covers all orthopaedic problems you are likely to see and tells you about treatment too. It also reminds you about orthopaedic examination for the rusty A and E SHO coming from a house officer background! Illustrations helpful and stands up to its promise of being a 'pocketbook'.

Author: Atul Gawande
By Profile Books

Gently dismantling the myth of medical infallibility, Dr Atul Gawande's Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science is essential reading for anyone involved in medicine--on either end of the stethoscope. Medical professionals make mistakes, learn on the job and improvise much of their technique and self-confidence. Gawande's tales are humane and passionate reminders that doctors are people, too. His prose is thoughtful and deeply engaging, shifting from sometimes-painful stories of suffering patients (including his own child) to intriguing suggestions for improving medicine with the same care he expresses in the surgical theatre. Some of his ideas will make health-care providers nervous or even angry, but his disarming style, confessional tone and thoughtful arguments should win over most readers. Complications is a book with heart and an excellent bedside manner, celebrating rather than berating doctors for being merely human. --Rob Lightner
Average rating of 5/5 Insightful read, 2008-10-18
This book is certainly an excellent read. It is particularly good if as a medical doctor like myself you gain insight into the medical experience and life of a colleague battling and struggling with similar difficult decisions. Medicine often comes across to the non-medical world as an exact and perfect science. I suspect much of this comes from us within the medical profession as we speak so confidently of diagnoses that are often times just educated guesses. Reading this book will open your eyes to the struggles we have as doctors on a daily basis in determining the ultimate result - the best possible care and outcome for the individual patient.

Average rating of 5/5 Best Paces book out there, 2007-03-03
The problem with MRCP Paces is that there aren't that many books out there to read. The main texts are the Ryder books and this one.

In my opinion this book is better than the Ryder text. It treats each station comprehensively and in a logical format. The problem with the Ryder books are that they are very haphazard. The books jump from one topic to another, almost as though you are reading what came into Ryder's head next!

Baliga doesn't have many pictures (as noted in many of the reviews under that book) and is far more theoretical than the Hall and Ryder books.

As noted in previous reviews, Hall also gives some detail to the communication and ethics station compared to either Baliga or Ryder.

It's slightly unfair to compare the Hall book to Ryder and Baliga as Hall has the definite advantage of having been published later and so can respond to how the Paces exam has developed.

Having said this, buy all four books (this, the two Ryder and Baliga). They all have different detailed examples in them and it's important that you get as wide a variety of examples before taking the Paces. As noted above, there aren't enough books out there currently for Paces candidates to pick and choose books.

Average rating of 5/5 Survival guide for any nurse!!!!!!!, 2008-04-30
This is a fantastic book for not only nurses but also student nurses. It covers everything that you need to know from, procedures such as ECG's and Urine Tests, to a section decidated to Pharmacology. As well as having in depth details on numerous procedures and drugs the book also contains a section on systems such as the renal and nervous systems for example. These are then broken into sections containing illnesses/problems and why they occur, and the nursing care required. The book also covers a large amount of A and P, and would be excellent for the Specfic Health Needs and Individual Health Needs module due to the amount of information it contains. The book it self is also small which I find great as you can pop it in your bag and use it to refer whist on placement. I know several other student nurses who have brought this book and also rave about it and would strongly reccomend it.

Average rating of 5/5 great help with Anatomy and physiology..., 2007-04-08
This book is fantastic it really helps you get to grips with A & P. It does not have to be used with the Ross and Wilson text book, but that is how i used it. A great book for anyone on a nursing course or such like.
