An excellent introduction to cosmology, 2005-08-07 Laymen's guides to physics usually resort to metaphors that are seriously misleading. The alternative is a highly mathematical approach that is inaccessible to most readers. Coles manages to simplify without misleading. Actually, some basic knowledge of physics is assumed, at least if you want a full understanding of what is being said, but it is never beyond high school level and most of the book does not require even that.Covering relativity, quantum theory, particle physics and much else, this is a perfect introduction to a vast and profound topic. My only complaint: cosmology is a fast-changing subject. A new edition is needed very soon.

Brilliant, 2003-06-15 A friend of mine reccomended this book to me for my advanced level physics course. I found it simple to use and the questions were good practise before i sat the exam. If you are following the Edexcel specification, this book is excellent.. GET IT!

BUY THIS BOOK!!!!, 2007-02-06 Tipler is excellent!!! - If you're doing 1st year physics this book is an essential buy!
It takes you though the key concepts of each topic and tells you everything you need to know, the examples are clear and written in simple, plain English.
It's especially usefully when you've forgotten something really simple and all your other books assume you already know it. Tipler tells you everything!!

Mediocre, 2008-04-01 This is the book that my school provides for the IB Physics course. Whilst it contains everything you need to know, the layout of the text is difficult to get to grips with and it is written for those who feel they should read it from cover to cover. If you are in need of particular aspects of physics, this isn't the book for you. Nor would I reccomend it for those who are struggling in physics. This is merely a companion (and it is good at this- reenforcing much of what you are being taught)but can't really be used to teach something new.
The questions contained in this also aren't great. There are a decent amount, but they vary hugely in quality with some reflecting the exams, others leaving you scratching your head.
A decent enough companion, but would leave people like me who struggle questioning their choice of physics!
