Average rating of 5/5 An excellent stats book for any Biology student, 2000-11-01
I currently am doing a degree in Zoology at university and decided upon purchasing this book for my course. It easily summarises all aspects of statistics which cover and surpass the requirements of the statistics involved in Biology data collection. Every aspect is easily laid out with a formula, an explanation of the parts of the formula and how and when you use that formula in Field Biology. The appendices at the back cover in detail, any tables for formulae throughout the book. Any statistics is easy in Biology with "Practical Statistics for Field Biology", nothing is left for you to question. Everything is explained in enough detail for anyone with any amount of previous mathematical knowledge. A must buy if you rely on statistics in Biology!

Average rating of 5/5 Great for MBA students, 2005-10-28
I recommend this to any business student. Most of the main theoretical models are covered in enough depth to aid understanding and justify/otherwise inclusion in assignments.

Well worth the money.

Average rating of 5/5 An Excellent Book, 2006-03-13
I used this book as part of my Mathematical Methods option in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, and found it very helpful; the MEI series of books is not linked to any specific syllabus (although it has strong links with OCR), which makes them suitable for anybody taking an A-Level Mathematics subject or equivalent.

The book strikes a perfect balance between introducing new concepts, detailing the composition and applications of said concept (through worked examples and extensive diagrams) and supplying questions to practice said concept. The pace is well judged, neither labouring a point unnecessarily nor overloading a reader with multiple concepts before adequately explaining them, which makes it ideal for self-study. Each chapter ends with a 'key-points' section, which is very useful for revision.

Although this book essentially covers AS-Level Mathematics, I fully recommend this book to anyone taking a mathematics based subject.

Topics covered:
Basic algebra; Co-ordinate geometry; Polynomials; Uncertainty; Indices; The language of mathematics; Sequences and series; Differentiation; Integration; Trigonometry; Logarithms and exponentials; Further differentiation and integration

Average rating of 3/5 Algebra HELP!, 2005-11-14
I've just started a university course that i needed a little element of Algebra to make certain calculations

This book explains topics very well. The only things which i think it lacks is having questions that the reader can work through to improve their own skills.

Great book, but only good for reference/understanding.

Average rating of 5/5 Fantastic - even for people who are good at maths, 2008-08-05
I purchased this as a gift for a dyslexic friend. Obviously I had a quick read before wrapping and found it to be superb.

I'm pretty good at maths, but never remembered how to do some of the basic stuff that I was taught in primary school. I've always been able to trigonometry and algebra but haven't been able to do long division since about 1982!

This book teaches "how" and "why" you need to know these basic things.

Imagine walking into a shop and seeing signs stating "20% off everything" and not understanding what this actually means or getting change from a cashier and not being able to work out whether it is correct or not.

If you are rubbish at maths and are too embarrassed to go to an "adult maths refresher course" then this book is for you. If you are good at maths but just want to recap on things you didn't learn when you were 5 years old then this book is also for you.

Highly recommended. Easy to read. Easy to learn with real world examples.

Author: Euclid
By Dover Publications Inc.

Average rating of 5/5 not for the faint of heart..., 2002-10-24
Euclid begins by stating a few a definitions and logical rules. 'A line is a breathless length' and 'Things that are equal to the same thing are equal to each other'. The proofs that follow are simple and elegant. The second flowing from the first in a natural sequence. But this is no higgledy piggledy random wandering.

In the first book the author leads the reader to Pythagoras theorem. Just as every statement Euclid makes is essential to the proof, every proof is essential to the book's goal. The clarity and beauty of this book is something to behold

Heath's commentary is a very interesting complement. He provides alternative ancient and modern proofs as well as notes on the historical development of the mathematics.

A word of warning - this book took me about six months to read. I was unable to follow the book without following the proofs with a compass, ruler etc. However, if you are prepared to put in the time the rewards are considerable.
