Average rating of 4/5 A useful quick primer, 2008-06-10
Schaum's Outlines are never going to be classics, but they are sound, inexpensive and good value. Despite having an extensive library of other mathematics texts, I often come back to Schaum's for the worked-out solutions of problems.

In my work I often meet software engineers who started out in other disciplines and have had very little exposure to the parts of discrete mathematics that are useful in software engineering. I normally suggest that they use this Schaum's Outline of Discrete Mathematics as a quick primer. So far there have been no complaints!

Average rating of 2/5 Covered better elswhere- good only for a quick reminder, 2008-05-06
Whilst the textbook in the same series may seem bright, colourful and easy to understand- don't expect the same quality from this revision guide. If you've got the textbook in this series they have just taken the same examples, questions and put them into a dreary and reptitive book that covers the same material in the same way. If you don't have the textbook from this series or are looking for a quick reminder of things- then buy it- otherwise its not worth your money.

Aimed at any serious programmer or computer science student, the new second edition of Introduction to Algorithms builds on the tradition of the original with a truly magisterial guide to the world of algorithms. Clearly presented, mathematically rigorous, and yet approachable even for the maths-averse, this title sets a high standard for a textbook and reference to the best algorithms for solving a wide range of computing problems.

With sample problems and mathematical proofs demonstrating the correctness of each algorithm, this book is ideal as a textbook for classroom study, but its reach doesn't end there. The authors do a fine job at explaining each algorithm. (Reference sections on basic mathematical notation will help readers bridge the gap, but it will help to have some maths background to appreciate the full achievement of this handsome hardcover volume.) Every algorithm is presented in pseudo-code, which can be implemented in any computer language, including C/C++ and Java. This ecumenical approach is one of the book's strengths. When it comes to sorting and common data structures, from basic linked list to trees (including binary trees, red-black and B-trees), ...
Average rating of 5/5 Sound introduction to foundational algorithms, 2007-05-13
The algorithms, including the mathematical background and justification, are set out clearly. The comprehensive index makes this a useful reference. Online resources to support the book include a corrections page and an explanation of the "Professor's names" jokes scattered through the text. There is an instructor's manual but, given the widespread use of the book in formal training courses, it is not available to independent users of the book, whether students or practitioners.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent, 2007-10-28
I am currently studying an OU primer course in Maths and this book along with its AQA A-level partner were recommended by my Tutor. The AQA syllabus closely mirrors the OU primer. This review applies to both the AS and A2 books.

As the books are not cheap and Amazon does not offer massive discounts on A-level texts I made a visit to Waterstones where I was able to check their suitability and compare them with their main rivals. I must have been impressed because I walked out of Waterstones with copies of both!

All I can say is that I am amazed how good the books are. The sections are clear and well presented. The authors and publishers have spent a lot of time working on the textual explanations so you are eased through each step in the mathematical process. The CDs are useful, using PDF files which integrate well with the textbooks. At the end of each section there's lots of relevant practice questions to try.

The Maths textbooks I used in the 1970's were dull and opaque compared to these - no wonder exam results are improving!

Average rating of 5/5 An excellent introductory econometrics textbook, 2002-05-25
This textbook comes with many "real" examples which allow readers to learn and realize the applications of econometric techniques. It also gives an introduction to panel data and time series methods which are very common in empirical works, but not covered by many introductory textbooks.

Average rating of 5/5 A very useful book, 2004-05-20
This one text covered all of the maths involved in my first year physics degree course, including my optional statistics module, and some error analysis.

The contents and index are detailed, the introductions at the beginning of each chapter are easy to read and understand - for those of us who don't appreciate awkward sentences interspersed with unnecessary jargon and equations, that will neither be remembered nor understood (and don't need to be). I have also found the summary boxes particularly useful when revising for exams or checking things i should know when doing questions.

Overall i was very impressed with this book, much less dry than most of the competition, and not something i will be selling before i finish my degree.

Average rating of 5/5 insightful and complete account on Riemann Conjecture, 2007-09-03
Being a mathematician myself I have always found it difficult to find a maths book that was, on one side of a level that could be followed without being sitting in a library with a great aount of reference books, and of the other of a level enough not to get bored. Sure this is the best i've read. It's written following historical line and it becomes apage turner, as if it were a novel
