Average rating of 5/5 Fascinating subject, brilliant book, 2007-07-29
For me, this book reads as easily as a good novel, and I refer to it before any 'day out' in Scotland, so I know what I'll be looking at. The text is straightforward, the diagrams are informative and the photographs are superb. Congratulations to all concerned in the book's production, and thank you for adding another dimension to my view of my country.

Average rating of 5/5 Great Book!, 2009-08-01
An excellent and easy read. A vivid and entertaining story of the science of the impact and the scientific process around the discovery. Some pretty naff pictures inside and the cover does look a bit like a scientology book, but it's really worthwhile.

Average rating of 5/5 A Pleasant Read, 2009-07-27
As an Entomologist/Ornithologist I cannot comment on the deeper scientific authenticity of this book, what I can say is that it satisfied my requirements for interesting science reading in that it is easy to follow even with limited initial information, is well laid out and seems to have been very well researched. Hallam certainly appears focused on honestly reviewing the current research and arguements rather than pounding out his own agenda, and in presenting it in a user-friendly manner, all said I would honestly recommend this as excellent travel or evening reading for anybody with even the slightest interest in the questions addressed

Average rating of 5/5 'Worlds in Collision' truly fascinating., 2009-11-09
Whether you agree with the ideas put forward in this fascinating book or not, any open minded person will acknowledge it as a wonderful read. The great thing about it is that it makes you think; it moves outside accepted theories and, to a large extent, histories and provokes that most useful of human activities - although one frequently ignored today both in society and, sad to say, in many universities - thought! It is only by open minded thought that we progress. Do read this book!

Average rating of 5/5 An important contribution: comprehensive and compelling, 2006-01-31
Are you concerned about the current oil and gasoline prices? Do you want to understand what will happen in the future with energy and our standard of living? Then you must read this book. And you will learn that in 1956 a geologist working for Shell Oil, M. King Hubbert, made a prediction (in a paper titled "Nuclear Energy and the Fossil Fuels"). Hubbert then predicted that all U.S. oil production would peak in the early 1970s. At the beginning, all the experts and gurus discarded this men's prediction. But he was right, because U.S. oil production peaked out in 1970. Afterwards, mainly in the 1990s, geologists, oil engineers and analysts began referring to Hubbert's Peak, and using his methods to estimate the peak year for word oil. That is to say, at what point humanity will have consumed half of all world oil endowment, which took hundred of million of years to accumulate. A point that only takes 100 years to reach since oil production started ..... If the actual predictions are correct ( Hubbert's curve is not longer debatable; pending issue is the correct peak year, now estimated to be between 2007 and 2012) the implications for world economy, oil prices, the premises of occidental civilization, will be devastating. So, even if you are not into oil, gas or energy, I consider this book to be of mandatory reading to better understand the workings of the energy world, and dismiss certain current myths, like the possibility of expanding oil production radically through new methods; drilling deeper or in new places. The author of this book, Professor Kenneth Deffeyes, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, is highly qualified to take you on a fascinating ride, which will qualify non experts to better understand all the factors involved in oil production and future possibilities. Reader will comprehend the origins of oil; what are reservoirs and oil traps; how does one find oil; what are the products that derive from oil, and how do they impact our current lives; how do you drill for oil and extract it; where and when can you discover an oil field. Better yet, this book will leave you in a position to better assess the future of fossil fuels, and certain realities about much discussed, but seldom understood, alternative energy sources. Congrats to Professor Deffeyes, for preaching a clear and understandable energy Gospel. He has proven his worth, as an ex fellow worker of Magister Hubbert, when he started his personal journey, back in the 1950s, at Shell's research lab in Houston....A review by Luciano Lupini.

Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant, 2010-06-03
This is an excellent undergrad text for anyone doing any work with sediments. Starting with basically no background in Geology it was a lifesaver of a text and has now seen me to third year undergrad and its still a well used text and will be coming with me this summer when doing my mapping.

You often see the diagrams popping up in lecture and lab notes as they are absolutely excellent and are fantastic for illustrating points and I have used modified versions in exams to good success. Must buy for any amateur or professional geologist as its simply excellent.

Average rating of 5/5 THE BEST BOOK ON QUANTUM MECHANICS, 1998-07-23
This is the Volume 3 of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 3 treats the subject of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. It contains a large amount of subjects, is very detailed, rigorous, and contain topics not usually found in other textbooks, such as for example the theory of symmetry, the quantum mechanics of polyatomic molecules and topics relating to the nuclear structure. It still contains a mathematical appendice on special functions used in quantum mechanics, which makes the book practically self contained. No better textbook on quantum mechanics can be recommended to the physicists. Certainly the best book of all time on quantum mechanics!

Average rating of 5/5 Great for those who didn't do A-level maths, 2001-01-29
A great catch-up for students of geology who did not study maths at A-level. The maths is combined with geological problems which makes it relevant. The chapter on statistics is especially good for those studying geochemistry. The graphs section covers stereonets and triangular diagrams such as those used for sedimentary rocks. At the end of each chapter are test questions with answers at the back of the book.

It got me through a degree in Geology at Imperial College several years ago. So if you are floundering in intergration and differentiation and struggling with the chain rule then buy this book!
