Average rating of 5/5 At last, a readable guide to the IEE wiring regulations !, 2008-02-28
This book is an excellent, clear guide to the IEE wiring regulations, suitable for all users of the regulations.
I found both the text and in particular the illustrations, very useful in resolving different interpretations surrounding earthing and bonding issues.
There is also a very useful short section on harmonic assessment.
I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommeding the book to both practising electricians and electrical circuit designers.

Average rating of 5/5 Top drawer, 2007-06-06
Exceptionally well-written book which almost falls over itself to be helpful, with the Chapter At A Glance page at the start of each chapter and the Quick Reference pages at the beginning.

I've got three other books on Project 2007 and this is easily the most readable and enjoyable. It keeps you interested with the well-worked examples on disc for you to follow along with and imparts a very good depth and breadth of information.

I was uncomfortable with Project before reading this book and tried a lot of tinkering with the software in an attempt to ease my uncertainties. This book takes a lot of the donkey-work out of that process by giving solid exercises to guide you each step of the way.

It gets you up and running in no time and leaves you keen to explore even deeper. The last 50 pages introduce Server but the main thrust is with the desktop application; perfect for my working requirements.

One of the few books which takes the frustration out of the learning process - no hesitation in giving it a maximum 5 out of 5.

Average rating of 5/5 The "absolute must read" in software engineering, 2006-08-29
I was working for several years in software development, exposed to systems engineering context before reading this book. I think Brooks was so right so long ago that this is "the absolute must read book" on software engineering for anyone interested.

Brooks writes in each chapter about different concerns that affect Software Engineering. The chapters include experiences the author had during his work in IBM back in the 70s. This makes it even more interesting since you actually learn about history of the craft. Note that the main content was written a while ago, but, much of it still applies in today's environment.

This edition includes the original essays and adds new content that comment on the book, the evolution of the field and what the author thinks is still applicable and what not.

As a whole it is very readable and many times fun to read. IMO this is a must read for anyone working in software engineering.

Ok, so I am a simple chap and not very good at knowing if someone is diddling me so I bought this book to help me when I was recently getting in some people to do work at my house. It actually worked out really well and saved me a lot of time and money.

Average rating of 5/5 If you are planning a building / extension project, then read this first., 2007-12-28
I read this book because we're planning an extension, and I found it to be extremely helpful.

Kevin rationalises the emotive process of designing your own dream. He provides loads of tips and many helpful checklists.

More than anything he provides a compelling case for finding good architects for your project and working closely with them - he makes a convincing case to illustrate that their work will effectively cost you nothing.

Average rating of 4/5 Essential if you plan to pass the C&G Exam, 2006-07-05
This book will never win a prize for literary content, but if you're going to get serious about Portable Appliance Testing it's this season's must have and it will get you through the C&G exam. Somewhat expensive (hence 4*s) - to be expected maybe? - electrical engineers are probably not best known for their writing skills so there must be a rarity premium. Tells you what you need to know and lots of stuff you don't - hardcore information and good for insomnia too. The Amazon combo deal including this title and "PAT - Portable Appliance Testing: In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment" by Brian Scaddan is excellent and gives you the only two documents you really need. Well worth the money.

Average rating of 5/5 Keep this with your VW at all times, 2001-09-06
This is by far the best reference manual you can have. It guides you through the tasks involved in keeping your vehicle running. Written in a very laid back and amusing style, the text and cartoon-like diagrams aid the novice to gain the confidence required to maintain, service and take pride in their VW. If you are thinking about taking up the great task of renovating an old VW, you will find this book the best 'tool' you have.

Average rating of 5/5 Clearly presented handy reference on earthing and bonding, 2005-06-13
Earthing and bonding are obviously critical parts of an electrical installation.

This spiral-bound book briefly covers the definitions of earthing and bonding, and then proceeds to illustrate 50 practical examples which do not comply with the IEE 16th edition regulations, together with the correct method.

The examples include:
- dealing with inadequately earthed installations;
- whether supplementary equipotential bonding is required;
- earthing of conduit, armoured cable etc;
- preventing corrosion of bonding connections;
- bonding in a block of flats;
- etc...

Pointers to the relevant IEE regulations are provided where necessary.

I bought this book while studying for the City and Guilds 2381 exam, and it's the clearest book I found on the subject - the illustrations and text are a cut above most of the other books on the Wiring Regs - easy for a novice to understand, but perhaps a useful "handy reference" even for the more experienced contactor. I hope "Part 2" is as good!
