Detailed construction practices, 2003-07-18 This book boasts some very useful features indeed. It gives a basic introduction and coverage of construction practices and proceedures, along with some excellent diagrams. Each section describes the practices involved in the different areas, as well as the materails used and their many characteristics and constraints. However, this book has large bodies of text which somehow dont seem to reflect the required detail. It never seems to go beyond the basic principles, and only touches on these in the most simplistic way. The diagrams however, are of the highest quality. There are many of them, all layed out in a professional manner and well annotated. They would be ideal for reference purposes and a very notable example of how a student should aim to present their own work. Additionally, the comments on the different types of material can be useful as many other trade literatures fail to do this. To summarise, this book is a very basic introduction to the methods and principles of building, ideal for a student at lower level. It is not one to be used at an advanced level, but would prove a useful guide to the newcomer.

A definite recommend, 2003-11-14 This is our course text book for the Environmental Science module of my degree in Building Surveying, if you are interested in buidings (bearing in mind it is a text book) - it is still a pretty good read. For the course I'm studying it is first rate, very concise and clear, the sections we've used most are on the principles of heat, thermal insulation in buildings (U-values etc) and energy use in buildings (thermal comfort etc) it also covers acoustics, light, and water in equal depth. First rate, a definite recommend.

For those who are clueless when it comes to anything mechanical, 2008-12-16 I bought this book after spending 1200 euros in a year purely on routine servicing for my vehicles. I knew absolutely nothing about engines, or oil, or maintenance or anything of the sort.
In almost a year since i bought this book, I have carried out ten full services on my own vehicles and those of all my family members.
This book gives you what most ' how to' books DON'T.
That is ' THE CONFIDENCE TO HAVE A GO YOURSELF' without feeling inadequate, or confusing you with terminology that is hard to understand.
This book, like all Dummies books I've seen is written in extremely simple jargon that a child could understand, and assumes absolutely no prior knowledge. It quickly explains the basics, then moves on accordingly until you quickly reach a thorough understanding of each subject.
It's also written in a way that you can jump from section to section of particular interest, without having to read the book from beginning to end before you can attempt to do anything.
The only downsides to the book, and the reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that although simply written, its written for an American audience and some of the terminology differs from British.
The diesel section also is a little dated now, as diesel engines have improved leaps and bounds in the past few years. I feel this is partly due to the fact that until recently there were little or none diesel cars in the usa, so this section could be improved upon.
But a very valuable book to me, and a perfect present for anyone who would LIKE TO HAVE A GO, but lacks the confidence and know-how.
I certainly feel it has taught me a lot and has been a worthy investment.

The only dissertation book you'll ever need!, 2008-03-24 I bought this book to assist with my dissertation and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't have a clue where to start, what sections had to be included, the content of these sections and all the common questions you are probably also asking right now. Fear not!! Click on buy this book and in a day or so you'll have all the answers you need! I am confident this is the only book you'll need (not so great for your lengthy reference list however!)
Good luck and may the words flow freely!

Good for beginners, 2008-05-14 This book is ideal for the beginner who is just starting out on a new hobby of whittling. It gives you details of all the equipment you need and close up pictures of the techniques for the cuts etc. However the majority of the projects are cockerels - cockerels leaning back, cockerels leaning forward, cockerels looking up - depending on the angle of the fork in the twig. For inspiration for a wider range of projects you need to look elsewhere.
