I recommend this book to everyone!, 2003-06-26 This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. It was bought for me by my boyfriend who really loves it and I read it despite thinking it looked a bit naff. I wasn't sure about the first couple of chapters but I persevered and I am so glad I did!Ocean Warrior is a true story and throughout keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. There is loads of action all the way through but at the same time the book is extremely moving and made me question what exactly is really important in life. This book really shows how one person can make a HUGE difference in the world if they have the courage and conviction to really take a stand for what they believe in, are prepared to challenge rather than accept injustices and not let seemingly insurmountable obstacles stand in their way. This book is truly inspiring and I recommend it to everyone.

How reliable is the information?, 2006-01-30 I enjoyed this book.Gogarty expresses himself well. But in one region alone which I know well,Slapton and Torcross, there are several errors of fact.Ihe previous owner of the Start Bay Inn was called Emberson not Anderson.Locals may refer to outsiders as "grockels" but not "grockos".The late Ken Small used to be found by the Sherman tank in the car park at Torcross not the Slapton Monument car park. All this in a few pages. So how reliable is the rest of the book?

Gary Sherman

Essential Book, 2008-05-21 Having done a review of this book, I must say that I could hardly wait for it to become available. Sherman does a great job of introducing the GIS tools available using Open Source software, and uses clear, easy to understand real-world examples that non-specialists will easily relate to. For people wishing to move from proprietary mapping tools to Open Source ones, this book will help to make the transition smooth and relatively painless. For more advanced users, it will make a very useful reference book, as it goes into plenty of detail, even tackling command line scripting and other more advanced methods. Congratulations, Gary, on a job well done.

Technical but informative, 2003-09-06 Having read this book for the OU course it was compulsory! Like all OU books it takes you through the theory and explains things in laymans terms. The questions aren't always easy but its not a particularly easy subject. Ideal if you want to go to University to study Oceanography & you want an idea of what you are in for!

Lucid summary of best available science, 2007-11-28 Lucidly written by an outstanding scientist, discusses the many factors and mechanisms involved, and places anthropogenic change in its context along with natural factors. The scientific consensus on this issue has shifted steadily in one direction, from airy speculation about whether man-made change is real, to pressing concerns about how much, how soon, to what effect, and what to do about it; this book shows why.

Wide ranging, easy to use text, 2007-05-11 The other reviewer was spot on with their appraisal of this book. I've just completed a degree in conservation and I've used this book in the first, second and third years. It's been useful in an incredible variety of topics. I've used for geology, geography, conservation, soils, environmental pollution and ecology topics. Although an academic text, aimed at first and second year university students, in places this makes an interesting read for anyone wanting to find out more about the environment. Great illustrations, easy to read and stimulating. My lecturers at university recommended this book early on in the course. It didn't take long to realise why.

P. Pinet

The sea! Oh the sea!, 2004-05-01 Paul Pinet's book is aimed at the formal student new, not only to the subject, but to science in general. He assumes the reader knows no science at all and in so doing gradually introduces the reader to the wonders of the sea, and all the science necessary for that understanding. "Oceanography" is a very formal name for a subject that probably interests more people than they realise. If you have ever wondered about waves, ocean currents or life in the sea then this book is ideal for anyone to learn from, irrespective of their formal education. It is lavishly illustrated with excellent clear diagrams that complement a clear, easy to read text which nevertheless imparts the author's enthusiasm for the subject. There are a host of pedagogical features that a student will benefit from and the casual reader can happily ignore. There are links to a dedicated website and further reading, so that the beginner can take this book and advance with it. All in all, a wonderful book. I read it on my commuter train - my only criticism is the floppy cover and square shape means it physically deteriorates en route! A minor point for a wealth of interesting information, extremely well presented.
