Average rating of 5/5 The organic chemist's new Bible!!, 2007-03-17
As an undergraduate, one could not pick a better book to strengthen one's skills in synthetic methodology. This book has literally all the name reactions one could care to think of, for each case giving a history to its development, its applications, its mechanism and reason for reagent choice. Then, as if that wasn't satisying enough, it gives a number of recent synthetic applications, with full references and reaction conditions.

That's not all, the book also contains summary pages, for example, if you ever wanted to know the various methods for arriving at transformation X, a table is given which gives all the applicable name reactions (assymetric included!).

This book is the applied organic resource every postgraduate should have, and that every undergraduate should know about. Absolutely unmatched (not even by J. Li's name reactions, 3rd edtn.).....you will have spent every penny wisely!!

Average rating of 5/5 Simple? Yes? Relevant? Definitely, 2008-03-12
Here is a little background. I am basically an 18 year old student who just finished his A Levels. Instead of taking what university offers I got, I decided that I wanted to go into Medicine, for which I needed to take A Level Chemistry. I have only used this book, and while it remains simple and very thin, you only learn what you NEED to learn. It's perfect as a companion textbook, but at a stretch can be used alone.

I got this book October 2007 so I could sit all my AS modules in January. With the aid of past papers, this book effectively got me through the AS course. In 3 months. I passed all 3 papers with an A and two Bs which I will resit come June anyway.

What I got is irrelevant, at the end of the day, if this book can help me get those kinds of grades in only a few months, how effective would it be if you used it over a year?

Average rating of 4/5 Organic solutions, 2002-06-26
I would recommend it to those who are finding organic chemistry difficult so the underlying themes of the subject can be more clearly understood.
It does this by providing model answers to the end of chapter assignments in the core text in a clear and coincise manner with plenty of explanation.

Average rating of 5/5 Fantastic book - Grade A for sure!!, 2007-05-02
This book is excellent, especially if you are studying A level chemistry and thinking of doing a degree in Chemistry. It's superb, it has helped me out a lot and I have achieved a grade A for A level chemistry - with the help of this book. It's much better than LETTS, COLLINS books! I have learnt a great lot with the help of E.N Ramsden books. -The structure of the book is so comprehensible. At the end of the each chapter there are plenty of question's to practise with answers! If anybody is studying A level Chemistry, go for this book -you'll pass with a Grade A!.

Average rating of 5/5 Amazing!, 2008-06-17
I only had 2 weeks left till my AS Chem exam and this book got me through it. All information in this group is relevant to exam past papers. Having gone through many past papers I have found that the book has been made to suit the exam paper style questions, which was extremely helpful.

There are a few questions at the end of each double page to check your revision progress, and these questions are taken from past examination papers, which again was very useful. A short combination of the modules into one paper is avaliable at the end of the book and answers are provided with clear illustrations and guidance for ALL questions.

Calculations are shown step by step and many diagrams are used to help with your understanding. This book covered the ESSENTIAL points needed to pass the exam. SOOO WORTH IT.

Average rating of 5/5 Good technical information, 2003-09-06
This is very definitely not a book for the non scientist since there is a great deal of fairily complex chemistry. If however you are interested in the scientific basis of perfume design rather than a pretty 'coffee table' ornament, this book is superb.

Average rating of 5/5 A paradoxically straightforward account of a realm thats anything but, 2006-04-27
This is one of the most easily understandable guides to quantum physics that I have read. Filled with creative analogies and anecdotes, this books allows the general reader to get their head around the facts at the edge of our knowledge. The author's livetime of physical research and tales of fellow big names in physics adds a human touch to a subject which can easily become bogged down in math and concept. Whilst we may not all be Einstein or Dirac we can peak into their world from our armchairs with this text.
