On a wintry February day in 1869 the great Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleyev fell asleep at his desk after a marathon game of patience. When he woke, he looked at the delicately logical arrangement of the cards and saw the solution to a problem that had been vexing him for years: how to tabulate all the known different chemicals in a rational, coherent and meaningful way. But how did he get there, intellectually? Was he just a dwarf standing on the shoulder of giants? Or uniquely gifted? On the basis of the facts and anecdotes Strathern skilfully weaves together here, the whole historical drama of chemical science, from the Four Elements of the Greeks, through the gold-hunting alchemy of the Arabs, to the near-misses (Phlogiston) of the Enlightenment, had been a kind of narrative prologue, building up to that seminal February day in Moscow and Mendeleyev's discovery of the Periodic Table. Strathern's style is polished, lucid and easy-going. It is also extremely well matched to the fascinating story adduced in this absorbing and enlightening book.--Sean Thomas
Truth is stranger than fiction....., 2010-06-29 Excellent plot ! Covers so much in one book and kept me interested all the way through. Gives you a real curiosity about the discoveries of those elements not covered though - can anyone recommend a follow up to this ?

Excellent text book, 2008-06-13 This book is divided into 3 parts, with each part divided into chapters and sections:- Part A) Foundations i.e. a bridge from GCSE to start of A level course. Part B) Fundamentals i.e. roughly AS level. Part C) Further chemistry i.e. A2 level. Some of the topics introduced in part B are further developed in part C. Part B is easier than Part C, both in presentation and content. Overall the book has less detail than say Chemistry in Context by Graham Hill, but explains the material and ideas very well. The book has good diagrams and pictures and use of colour, plus 'chemistry now' and 'further focus' boxes that extend the material. A useful box at the start of each chapter 'concept checkpoints' points to other sections in the book that are required understanding for that chapter. Each chapter concludes with a self test summary of the material. Although there are practice and exam questions, the answers to the exam questions are not in the book. This is an excellent all-round book, useful for revision and self study alike.

Simply written but very informative, 2009-12-30 Doing a MSc Biomedical Science 8 years after finishing BSc and admittedly, my theoretical knowledge had started to rust and fade.
The discussions go back to the basics so this can be used for undergrad studies. The progression from basics to more detailed discussion was well put. The writting is simple and very informative, yet not too detailed to make you miss the point. It has lived up to the title of being "clinical" by including case studies which are helpful to associated the theory to the cases.
The diagrams / flow charts on the different pathways and feedback mechanisms was a great guide to graphiclly organise all the information.
Since this is a clinical approach, discussions at molecular level is not in depth. There are diagrams and discussions but if molecular is what you want specifically; you should look else where. Also, there are no technical discussions on laboratory methods employed in the clinical laboratory.
For layout, the text size is decent and there are enough white spaces. Tables and diagrams (coloured) are good breaks from the text and are helpful summaries.
I have a more detailed reference book compared to this but for quick answers, this proves more handy. A good investment.

Writers who put themselves in the shoes of the student, 2009-06-15 This is a well written book which works from the persective of a student reader and covers most of the ground of general undergraduate chemistry (organic, inorganic and physical). The explanations in the main text are accompanied by well written, short marginal reminders of what particular terms mean and where (in the book) more comprehensive explanations may be found. Unlike many general chemistry books it does not asume that you have remembered absolutely everything up to that point and it gives the reader gentle reminders of the sorts of things which ought to be thought about.
The practical implications of particular chemical concepts are well written, are placed in break out boxes and are not too long. Some of the explanatory photographs are even half humerous, such as the section on molecules which have a right and left handness aspect to them where the point is illustrated by showing a pair of American cowboy boots. The molecular diagrams are fantastic as are the diagrams generally and, for the price, it is a good university level text and well worth getting.

Just what the Doctor ordered., 2007-02-08 I really enjoyed reading this book. It struck an excellent balance between scientific insight and salacious gossip. What a combination!
I was reading this in my hospital bed needing something demanding enough to save me from terminal boredom, but that I could pick up in short bursts. Just what the Doctor ordered.
