Average rating of 5/5 Fascinating, 2007-07-11
I haven't done any chemistry for over 20 years. I bought this on a whim and it's got me completely hooked. The book starts with basic introductions on the structure of DNA and proteins and then delves into ever more detail. It's easy to follow, consistently interesting and so well laid out that you find your knowledge increasing steadily as you read.

In order to get the best from the book, you'd probably need to have A level chemistry or similar but I'm managing to understand it despite my memory of organic chemistry being pretty dim.

Average rating of 5/5 Great book of Biochemistry, 2006-07-01
This book is like a bible of Biochemistry. It is easy to read and has many pictures that helps to understand the text. The book has been separated into four different parts. I had some trouble at first to understand all the special language. I got over the barrier, and now I have studied the book.

Average rating of 2/5 A bit messy, 2008-05-08
When I studies physics long ago we used this book to learn thermodynamics, and frankly I didn't like it. Atkins manages to derive all the formulas, but the book doesn't teach you to apreciate the overall structure of the theory.

If you have read Atkins and you are good with math, but still slightly confused about how the laws of thermodynamics actually fit together, then I highly recommend "Thermodynamics and an Introduction to Thermostatistics" by Herbert B. Callen. That is a better book.

Aimed at first/second year courses in biochemistry particularly those with a chemical bias, this text is authoritative, comprehensive and reflects current research in biochemistry--especially the advances in molecular and protein structure. There is increased emphasis on Human Disease and more extensive use of molecular techniques. It includes extensive molecular biology material and presents biochemistry from a chemist's perspective. As with the previous edition an annual update Supplement will be published to accompany the text, keeping it as up-to-date as possible. A Solutions Manual is available to accompany this text.

Contents: Introduction and Background: Life; Aqueous Solutions; Thermodynamic Principles: A Review; Biomolecules: Amino Acids; Techniques of Protein Purification; Covalent Structures of Proteins; Three-Dimensional Structures of Proteins; Protein Folding, Dynamics, and Structural Evolution; Haemoglobin: Protein Function in Microcosm; Sugars and Polysaccharides; Lipids and Membranes; Mechanisms of Enzyme Action: Introduction to Enzymes; Rates of Enzymatic Reactions; Enzymatic Catalysis; Metabolism: Introduction to Metabolism; Glycolysis; Glycogen Metabol...
Average rating of 5/5 A textbook you will actually read!, 2004-07-11
This book turned out to be the most used textbook of my undergraduate career. I found it to be informative without being too dry! The diagrams are used to great effect and the chapter on protein folding is superb. This is a great buy for biochemists or undergraduates in chemistry who choose to study some biochem modules etc.
