1st year medic's lifesaver!, 2007-03-28 ok, i hate biochemistry, and without this book i would have been lost forever! its exactly what i needed - a summary of key cycles and events at the beginning of each chapter, and then easy to follow flow diagrams illustrating all those horrible pathways.
For a first year medic this book is brilliant - i'd recommend it to anyone starting medicine! definitely the book of choice amongst my fellow first years!

Think Dog, 2008-02-04 Whata wonderful title and a wonderful author. I picked the book up and couldn't put the book down until i had read it from cover to cover... What an insight into a dogs mind from a very simple view point of being the dog!!!!! And hearing his thoughts and interpretaions into human behaviour. No wonder so many dogs are so mixed up.
A great book and a must to all dog lovers

Richard Dawkins
By Phoenix
Just as we trace our personal family trees from parents to grandparents and so on back in time, so in The Ancestor's Tale Richard Dawkins traces the ancestry of life. As he is at pains to point out, this is very much our human tale, our ancestry. Surprisingly, it is one that many otherwise literate people are largely unaware of. Hopefully Dawkins's name and well deserved reputation as a best selling writer will introduce them to this wonderful saga. The Ancestor's Tale takes us from our immediate human ancestors back through what he calls `concestors,' those shared with the apes, monkeys and other mammals and other vertebrates and beyond to the dim and distant microbial beginnings of life some 4 billion years ago. It is a remarkable story which is still very much in the process of being uncovered. And, of course from a scientist of Dawkins stature and reputation we get an insider's knowledge of the most up-to-date science and many of those involved in the research. And, as we have come to expect of Dawkins, it is told with a passionate commitment to scientific veracity and a nose for a good story. Dawkins's knowledge of the vast and wonderful sweep of life's diver...
Imagine No Religion!, 2008-09-07 Having read 3 or 4 Dawkins books, I get the distinct impression that he majors on 2 subjects: atheism and evolutionary biology. The great virtue of this book is that Dawkins is waxing lyrical about something he loves rather than something he hates (bar the final chapter) and hence shows what a great scientist he really is.
Whether this was intentional or not is hard to fathom but I feel that his magnum opus is Biology and the beauty of the wording combined with the immense depth of his research remind you of the flipside to this book - the God Delusion.
Before I started this book I was skeptical as to evolution and didn't believe in Bio or Abiogenesis. Since I have read it, I have found the measured tone and skillful combating of creationism in this book have won me over and I'm am now a far bigger fan of his than I was b4.
Of course, there is the last chapter where the supernatural is derided as not adding to the beauty of evolution. But even this chapter is measured and subtle, rather than polemnical.
As the cliche goes: if you don't believe in evolution, read this [Dawkins] book. But further to this, if you think Dawkins is Satan's son and is not an excellent scientist, then this book should also be top of your reading list rather than the latest CS Lewis...

Best Molecular Genetics Textbook!, 2008-09-09 This is an updated version (2006) which is significantly better than previous edition. Compared to Human Molecular Genetics (Strachan & Read), the Genome 3 is by far an easier textbook to read with excellent illustrations and an accompanying CD with all photos in jpeg or powerpoint ready figures - excellent for Lecturers who teach on the subject!! It has good introduction from DNA to genes to DNA replication /transcription/translation and more. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in molecular genomics especially undergraduates science/medical/dental students.

Fascinating, 2007-07-11 I haven't done any chemistry for over 20 years. I bought this on a whim and it's got me completely hooked. The book starts with basic introductions on the structure of DNA and proteins and then delves into ever more detail. It's easy to follow, consistently interesting and so well laid out that you find your knowledge increasing steadily as you read.
In order to get the best from the book, you'd probably need to have A level chemistry or similar but I'm managing to understand it despite my memory of organic chemistry being pretty dim.

Survival tool, 2006-08-25 Couldn't have survived the stats in either my degree or my MSc without this book, it gets down to what biologists care about in stats, what test to use, how to use it and what it shows, and avoids all the confusing 'mathsy' stuff in the middle (leaving you to read it in other books if necessary). If you want a stats book that is designed for biologists who have to cope with stats rather than statisticians trying to make something relevant to biology this is probably the book for you.

Aimed at first/second year courses in biochemistry particularly those with a chemical bias, this text is authoritative, comprehensive and reflects current research in biochemistry--especially the advances in molecular and protein structure. There is increased emphasis on Human Disease and more extensive use of molecular techniques. It includes extensive molecular biology material and presents biochemistry from a chemist's perspective. As with the previous edition an annual update Supplement will be published to accompany the text, keeping it as up-to-date as possible. A Solutions Manual is available to accompany this text. Contents: Introduction and Background: Life; Aqueous Solutions; Thermodynamic Principles: A Review; Biomolecules: Amino Acids; Techniques of Protein Purification; Covalent Structures of Proteins; Three-Dimensional Structures of Proteins; Protein Folding, Dynamics, and Structural Evolution; Haemoglobin: Protein Function in Microcosm; Sugars and Polysaccharides; Lipids and Membranes; Mechanisms of Enzyme Action: Introduction to Enzymes; Rates of Enzymatic Reactions; Enzymatic Catalysis; Metabolism: Introduction to Metabolism; Glycolysis; Glycogen Metabol...
A textbook you will actually read!, 2004-07-11 This book turned out to be the most used textbook of my undergraduate career. I found it to be informative without being too dry! The diagrams are used to great effect and the chapter on protein folding is superb. This is a great buy for biochemists or undergraduates in chemistry who choose to study some biochem modules etc.

Simple, entertaining and informative, 2002-01-29 This book was an absolute life saver for me. I am a student nurse who never paid much attention to biologly at school (a few years ago now). So after much struggling and soulsearching I found this book. It has helped me greatly, it explains everything in really simplistic terms without all the jargon. It goes quite indepth and now I understand the basics I am sailing ahead through the course. It is a very useful study guide and would recommend it to anyone who has difficulty getting to grips with the basic anatomy.
