Astonishing and ground-breaking; scientific evidence for the meaning of life., 2008-03-09
In quieter moments, I do wonder why we are here; whether we really are spiritual, or just purely material. I'm a fan of popular science books such as "The First Three Minutes" and "The Secret Life of Plants" that tell more about our world, how it came about and the mysterious things that go on in it. This book packs a big punch here and actually delivers an answer. An answer smack in-between Intelligent Design and Evolution. The simple explanation is that creation is brought about by a positive evolutionary "pressure" driving everyone and everything to fulfil their potential.
The book starts the story before the "big bang" and traces development of the material and spiritual universe through to life on earth and development of humans. Scientific, cosmological and historical evidence given is extensive, ranging across the creation of matter, the structure of the universe and atoms, the biology of evolution, the arising of consciousness and the development of civilisations.
There is an interesting body of experimental evidence demonstrating the fundamental forces which create shapes we see in nature. These same forms are shown to arise in simple processes of capillary dynamolysis, crystal growth and liquid flows. These fundamental forces are also revealed by electrical discharge photography. There is some tantalising evidence of effects of homeopathic remedies on crystal growth. Full details are given on how to repeat these experiments.
This weighty book is the culmination of decades of research by Dennis Milner and his team at Birmingham University, and contains a very useful reference guide to further reading. The scope is vast with sections also touching on healing, expanded consciousness, and psychic phenomena. Nevertheless, easy to read and well illustrated. I think the conclusion is well summarised by the quotation in the foreword:
God sleeps in the mineral,
Dreams in the vegetable,
Stirs in the animal,
Awakens in Man
Truly an astonishing and ground-breaking book; but one you will have to put down several times before finishing in order to digest what has been said.

Exhaustive research, solid evidence, 2008-05-09 I've been a little confused about the moon landing conspiracy for many years. I was aware that there were considerable holes in the photographic evidence presented to to the world by NASA, however was not yet prepared to accept that the entire Apollo program was fraudulent. Until I read this book. I am now 100% certain that this was a grand swindle and PR exercise. Wisnewski presents the evidence quietly, dispassionately and in detail. He sticks to the facts, and even goes so far as to prove that the claims of some conspiracy theorists are false in relation to some aspects of photographic analysis. He approaches his subject scientifically and maintains credibility at all times. No where in this book will you find claims regarding aliens, atlantis, or any other bunkum. Instead you get analysis for splash down accuracy, the descriptions and photographs of NASA's massive 'Simulation" facilities and a whole wealth of other data which leaves you with only one natural conclusion. Apollo was fake from start to finish.

enjoyable, flowing, well-paced, accessible, exciting, 2007-12-21 There are many reasons why I regard this book so highly.
The writing style and narrative is enjoyable, flowing, well-paced, accessible, exciting. The book is superbly researched. The events and human subjects covered in the book are interesting, anything but dull, the authors uncovered uncommon stories about them.
Most of all, I felt like I had walked away after reading this book seeing these spacefarers and astronauts as humans, real people, not celebrities. The authors managed to show us their humanity without losing respect for their accomplishments. In fact, in spite of their humanity, their weaknesses, their environment, I have even more respect for so many of these spacefarers now that I can appreciate what they went through and had to overcome to achieve what they were able to.
I even came away with a much deeper appreciation and understanding of people I've often considered enemies at worst (i.e., Russian spacefarers), and objects of derision at best.
The stories in this book touch the human spirit in a way that is universal, beyond politics, beyond creed, beyond country. That's because the authors were able to capture an underlying essence most humans on our planet share: the curiosity and wonder to explore and give one's life to a cause greater than one's own agenda or paradigm.

Moore and Lintottýs GCSE Astronomy - A High Recommendation, 2002-10-04 As a teacher of science and maths with students ranging in age from 13 to 84, if there's anything I've learned about selecting textbooks, it's this: it is very, very rare that a text comes along that not only presents its subject matter with clarity and wit, but actively engages the imagination and inspires the mind. Moore and Lintott's GCSE Astronomy is just such a text. The narrative style is friendly, conversational, and inviting; sometimes delightfully playful. The material is extremely accessible without compromising information content or attention to detail. The authors assume no previous experience with astronomy, but avoid the all-too-common errors of tragic over-simplification or stuffy condescension. And, perhaps most importantly of all, it's the kind of book to which one returns, long after one's studies are complete, because it's interesting, it's alive, and it's just so darn fun to read. I recommend it unreservedly to students, teachers, and anyone who has an ounce curiosity about the world around them.

Truly Brilliant, 2008-08-12 This book isexactly what it claims to be in the preface, the best introduction to astronomy and astrophysics for the mathematically literate around. its big, packed with useful information, the physics prelude reminds you of everything you know, and teaches some stuff you might not know. A reasonable grasp of physics (at least A-Level), and Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus is also required.

Jim Al-Khalili
By Taylor & Francis
Top-notch science book and a good intro to heavyweight cosmological topics, 2008-08-08 I really enjoyed reading this book, and have just started reading it again. I'm a big fan of Jim Al-Khalili's work, and the attempts he makes to explain seriously heavy cosmological ideas to everyday people.
What I think he does extremely well in this book is to help you build a difficult-to-understand concept in your mind, without a single mind-bending equation. This is all the more amazing, given that a sizeable portion of the information contained in this book is based on theory rather than proven fact.
The only thing that didn't work for me in this book was the attempts at humour. I really like the conversational style, as it really aids your understanding of the information, but the jokey comments remind me of seminars I've been to in the past where the listeners laugh at the speaker's jokes just to be kind and save embarrassment.
But anyway, apart from that, the book is faultless and it thoroughly deserves five stars. I would suggest reading it, even if you aren't interested in this subject. I think it would also work really well as an audiobook too.
