Subtle agriculture for a world in crisis, 2008-04-16 Masanobu Fukuoka defies western or modern agricultural techniques going down to the basics of traditional japanese life. No chemicals and no digging the land for an abundant and long term harvest. Planting with the heart. Mindfulness...
The book and Masanobu himself impressed me and I find myself following his path like that of a guru.

Excellent!, 2005-09-01 As duck books go this really is as good as it gets. Great information well presented, and a pleasure to read. Lots of factual information pleasantly punctuated with anecdotes of the author's experiences. It has something for everyone from the complete novice to the hard core experienced duck keeper. All aspects of duck keeping are covered, housing, nutrition, incubation, rearing and illnesses to name but a few. The early sections decribing the characteristics of various breeds is hugely useful to a novice helping to decide what breed is most suitable for you given the environment you will be keeping your ducks in. If you don't own this book, buy a copy. If you don't have any Ducks, buy some so you can justify owning a copy of this book!

A helpful and interesting read, 2007-12-29 Since having started training as a land agent, this book has proved a superb reference tool on regular occasions. As mentioned already, it doesn't cover the minutiae of every aspect of farming and rural business, but as a broad-spectrum reference book, I can't fault it. It's written in a very clear and unpatronising way.

The Smallholder's Manual, 2006-03-16 This is a much more practical and detailed book than anything else currently available on the subject. It's up to date and based on real experience which is more than one can say for some of the trendy television-linked books. If you're a smallholder, intending or existing, this is the book you need.

An excellent guide to growing fruit by the RHS, 2006-01-15 I have found this to be an invaluable book which I have used together with the Fruit Expert by Dr Hessayon. The latter is in full colour and is probably a superior guide to choosing your fruit trees and bushes with descriptions, colour pictures and ratings of lots of varieties. The RHS book is aimed at the planting, pruning and care of your fruits once chosen (although it does have short descriptions of the more popular varieties but no pictures of them). This book is in black and white and one other colour but this doesn't really detract from the numerous beatiful drawings. It has comprehensive detail with illustrations on planting and long term care of your fruit trees/ bushes. In particular it has illustrations of pruning for each fruit and each year of growth of that fruit in each of the growing styles available (eg illustrations of how to prune maiden, 2yr, 3yr, 4yr old trees, cordons, fans, pyramids, espaliers for apples with different illustrations for each fruit covered). This scores significantly over the fruit expert book which is much more limited in this regard with very generalised pruning techniques which you have to try and extrapolate to different types of fruit and different years of growth.
In summary an excellent book once you have chosen which variety to plant.

a delicous nut, 2003-05-15 what a great little book, when i first got it i was dissapointed by its small size, but as with many nuts - there is a whole lot of protein and other good things in a small package!!the book is a great introduction to permaculture, perfect for the beginner who wants to know about farms, gardens, and city living and not just to specialise in one area. It has great examples and is very well written and has a great biblio at the end to give lots of info sources. to sum up, its a great mulch from which to grow ideas!

Practical sheep keeping, 2007-11-27 As both the above say this a great book for any sheep keeper, a must for the small flock owner, but also of interest to the larger farmer. The seems to cover just about everyting you need to know in a practical easy to use sort of way - invaluable when you come rushing in from the farm to check on something.

Excellent field book for the serious tree pathologist, 2000-07-25 An updated edition containing new species of tree pathogens to the UK. It remains as ever the bible for foresters and arborists both undergraduate and graduate alike. Still the most practical and easily indentifiable way of diagnosing tree pathogens. The author remains insurpassable as ever.
