Average rating of 5/5 A great book & British too!, 2007-08-24
There are a lot of great books out there for beginners, but most of them are American, so the resources pages are not helpful to those of us starting out in the UK.

This book is published by Broad Leys, who are a small independent British publishers specialising in books for smallholders, homesteaders, poultry keepers and organic gardeners.

Exactly what I was looking for!

Average rating of 5/5 completely indispensible, 2005-01-30
My copy of this book is breaking apart at the spine and has a few missing pages: this is a testment only to the fact that I've used it so much. I'm an SHO in Paediatrics now, and, since I bought this book in third year I have used it countless times as both as a quick reference guide, and during revision for numerous exams. I quickly came to rely on this book and it's yellow-skinned cousin (OHCM) for brief and memorable introductions to ailments I encountered on the wards and during my revision. This edition is divided into several chapters including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, A£E, Orthopaedics, General Practice, and Psychiatry (amongst others).

While some might feel the poetic subtext on many of the pages is somewhat annoying and pretentious (read the page entitled 'a journey on foot' in the orthopaedic section), I have always found it a welcome augmentation to the raw medical dimension contained within the books pages.

No junior doctor in the UK should be without these books, of that I am certain.

Average rating of 4/5 Helpful starting point for BMAT candidates, 2005-10-03
This book contains tips and advice on what to expect on the BMAT test and what kind of skills you need to develop to do well. The majority of the book is taken up by a worked BMAT style paper. Each question has a commentary about different ways of approach and the techniques that could save you time. It also has copies of the answer sheet you'll have to fill in on the day of the test and the marking scheme. Reading this book alone would not be a complete preparation for the test - unless you ace all the questions - and further study texts are recommended inside. If you're not sure whether to buy it or not, try the online BMAT test first, if you need further explanation of what the test involves this is useful. But if that satistisfies your curiousity, use the time to swot up on your science skills or spend the money on reasoning books instead.
It only took me about 3 hours to go through this book but it did help me evaluate the skills I need to develop.

Average rating of 5/5 General practice, 2007-04-23
The best book to have if you are in GPland. It covers just the kind of stuff you need to know. None of how to repair this or that surgically, just how to manage patients in the GP surgery and when to know you are out of your depth. My tutor swears that the book was all that she used for her membership (though I don't think I could do just that). But it is by my side right now -fantastic book for the GP.

Average rating of 5/5 An excellent book, 2008-06-24
The clear pictures and easy to follow step by step guides were extremely helpful when it came to taking my C&G 2330 Level 3 practical exams. The section on completion of test certificates was particularly good, putting everything into plain language.

I would recommend this book to any trainee electrician.

Author: Jan Fennell
By HarperCollins Entertainment

The behavioural problems covered in The Dog Listener will sound all too familiar to anyone who shares their life with a canine companion. During the 25 years that Jan Fennell has been working with dogs, she's been increasingly aware of the ways in which communication between man's best friend and ourselves has broken down. Inspired by Monty Roberts, Fennell embraces similar ideas to those found in The Man Who Listens to Horses. Rather than trying to fit human psychology to animals, the starting point is observing how animals communicate, how they structure their groups in the wild and what they think their role is.

Initially Fennell looks at the role that dogs have played historically--primarily a working role, in which human and animal worked side by side to the same goal. Many owners flinch as the idea of a dog "working", with associations of oppression and hierarchy. But dogs naturally form a hierarchical society with the strongest, most intelligent dog leading the pack. Humans might thrive on the concept of democracy but dogs don't automatically feel the same way. When we understand and respect a dog's mindset, effective training can be done with intell...
Average rating of 5/5 Thoroughly inspirational, 2008-04-11
I found this book thoroughly inspirational. Jan Fennel has hit on something which simply works. It is purely logical and rational and just from putting things into the dogs perspective allows us to understand how they think and therefore why they sometimes behave the way that they do. I bought the book at the same time as getting a puppy and my 3 month old puppy now walks at heel with no need for a lead (though I still use one) and is a beautifully behaved member of our family.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Average rating of 5/5 The key to my success!, 2007-06-28
This book is wonderful i cannot praise it enough!

When i started med school i was told to buy clinically orientated anatomy (Moore and Dally) i struggled using this for the whole of my first year, and just before the exams i happened to glance at someone elses copy of Gray's and immediately ran out and bought it.

Topics that had baffled and evaded me all year became clear in an instant- the diagrams are that good! The explanations are more concise and not so waffly. The text is larger, so for me was much less intimidating. I will admit that the text is not as detailed as Moore and Dally, but for me this was a bonus, as i felt it was actually within my grasp, rather than just completely blowing me away!

Finally it is interesting that Birmingham University now reccomend this to their first year medics instead of Moore and Dally which they had used for many years. Also I'm pleased to say that having abandoned Moore and Dally, i aced my second year exams!!!

Average rating of 5/5 An essential buy, 2007-11-09
Before buying this book I attempted the online practice test (and failed!) after going through the book it highlighted areas I needed to work on. The book also provides example questions which are very similar to the test questions. I would not have passed first time without this book.
